History

Founding

The Land of Night was created when Oda Yayoi dismantled the former regimes of the Land of Waterfalls and the Land of Iron, suppressed their resistance forces, and merged their territories under a new shogunate. The daimyo title was abolished in favor of the Shogun, placing political, economic, and military authority under a single national government. 1

Yayoi's original organization expanded from a mercenary force by monopolizing both former countries' wartime markets and attracting new talent. After two years of war, it breached both daimyo estates, systematically purged armed resistance, and integrated its own personnel into the new bureaucracy. 1

Nine years after its founding, most remnants of the former governments had been eliminated and the state bureaucracy was operating in an orderly manner. The Hagoromo Clan, which had fled into the country after its defeat in the Land of Fire and later threatened the new regime, was exterminated. 1

Rise during the village era

The Land of Night entered the One Country, One Village era with an established administrative base, unlike newly founded ninja villages still building their education, commerce, and medical systems. Yayoi intended to use the expected period of stability before the First Shinobi World War to develop the country into a power capable of standing alongside the Five Great Nations. 18

Its military and economic growth attracted foreign clans, wandering ninja, samurai, and outside scrutiny. The country became recognized as one of the strongest states beneath the Five Great Nations, while remaining difficult for outsiders to assess due to its lack of a public mission system. 35 184

War with Kumogakure

Kumogakure established a forward base in an undeveloped archipelago within Land of Night territorial waters, intending to use it as a transit point for attacks on the country's northern mining regions. The Land of Night counterattacked, seized the archipelago, and converted it into a fortified maritime base. 231 246

Under Yayoi's personal command, approximately 3,000 Land of Night main-force ninja and samurai entered the Land of Lightning, captured key western cities including Mingxia City, and systematically transported industrial equipment, natural resources, chakra ore, and other seized supplies back to the homeland. 238 242 246

After more than a year of fighting, Kumogakure's counteroffensive collapsed. The Land of Night and Kumogakure reached a ceasefire, exchanged prisoners, and concluded reparations that included the Heavenly Transfer Technique and an agreement concerning the Land of Fields. 261 265 266

Annexation of the Land of Fields

Following the withdrawal from the Land of Lightning and the Land of Hot Water front, Yayoi began openly advancing the Land of Night's long-prepared annexation of the Land of Fields. The Land of Fields' daimyo and several hostile nobles had already been killed during the war, leaving the country politically fragmented. 266 268

Yayoi ordered the elimination of resistant noble factions while preserving cooperative nobles' status and wealth under Land of Night supervision. Land of Night-trained administrators replaced local officials, and an additional 1,000 ninja and samurai were deployed to establish direct control over the country's regions. 268 277

Government and administration

• Shogunate system — Yayoi combines the functions of a daimyo, military leader, and national executive. Ninja and samurai hold a leading position because they monopolize organized force within the state. 5
• Military Department — Established at the nation’s founding as the core national-defense organization. It was reorganized into twelve specialized departments during the twentieth founding year to resolve overlapping responsibilities and accommodate rapid military growth. 5 210

Yejian City lies near the former border between the Land of Waterfalls and the Land of Iron. Its climate is affected by the former Land of Iron’s cold eastern currents, and winter arrives early. 9

The capital is noted for its prosperity, steel-and-masonry construction, advanced resource extraction, and smelting technology. Foreign visitors from the Uzumaki Clan considered its urban development unusually advanced for the era. 1 36

The city uses geothermal installations to maintain warmth through its severe winters and later constructed a large modern martial arena for the First Ninja World Samurai Tournament. 19 183 184

Land of Fields

The Land of Night had invested in and infiltrated the Land of Fields for more than a decade before its formal annexation campaign. Following the death of the Land of Fields' daimyo and the removal of hostile noble factions, the Land of Night began replacing local officials and directly administering the country's regions. 268 277
