Background / History

Mu served as a leading guard of the Land of Earth's delegation during Hashirama's inauguration. There, he and Hozuki Gengetsu of the Land of Water nearly escalated their countries' dispute into open conflict. Although neither used their full strength, their clash ended in a draw and established their enduring hostility. 17

His reputation as a Dust Release user, stealth specialist, and flying ninja made him one of the Land of Earth's most dangerous combatants. Yayoi identified him as Ishikawa's follower and speculated that he could become Iwagakure's next Tsuchikage. 17

Over the following year, repeated encounters with Gengetsu left Mu heavily bandaged. While traveling with his student Ōnoki, he joined Yayoi, Kakuzu, and Irori against Uchiha Madara. Mu's Dust Release failed to strike Madara, whose Sharingan saw through Mu's chakra concealment; Madara then critically injured Mu with Susanoo's sword aura. 37 39 40 41

Yayoi saved Mu from his near-fatal injuries. The incident forced Mu to recognize both the limits of his knowledge about the Sharingan and the vast gap between himself and Madara. He later maintained a correspondence and a gradually friendly relationship with Yayoi. 41 50

By the Five Kage Summit, Mu was training Ōnoki in Dust Release and handling Iwagakure's security preparations. He was publicly positioned behind Ishikawa as a prospective Kage successor. 108 111

Following the Samurai Tournament in the Land of Night, Iwagakure formally selected Mu as Ishikawa's successor. With Ishikawa already advanced in age, Mu curtailed his travel and returned home to prepare for his impending tenure as Tsuchikage. 190

During the later war between Iwagakure and Kirigakure, Mu fought his longtime rival Gengetsu in a life-and-death engagement. Gengetsu died in the conflict, while Mu was recovered unconscious with extensive burns, failing organs, and dangerously depleted vitality. Appearance

Mu is a tall, lean ninja with an impassive expression. After his clashes with Gengetsu, he was seen wrapped almost completely in white bandages, leaving only his eyes exposed. 17 37

He is patient with Ōnoki and understands the First Tsuchikage's methods, having himself been similarly subjected to Ishikawa's schemes. 108 However, Mu has little tolerance for Gengetsu's provocations; their rivalry repeatedly devolves into insults and threats despite their willingness to stand down when ordered. 111 156

Madara's defeat left Mu more cautious and aware of the value of intelligence. He openly admitted that his lack of knowledge about the Sharingan had directly contributed to his near death. 41

After his crippling battle with Gengetsu, Mu prioritized peace negotiations and the stabilization of Iwagakure over further warfare, recognizing the limits imposed by his worsening condition. 270 273
