First Appearance Chapter 18

Background

Sun Ce inherited Sun Jian's enterprise before reaching twenty and established himself in Jiangdong after breaking from Yuan Shu. With only several thousand men at the outset, he defeated regional rivals including Liu Yao, Xu Gong, and Wang Lang, eventually commanding tens of thousands of troops. His success earned him the title Little Conqueror, originally spread from Xu Gong's memorial comparing him to Xiang Yu. 73 81

Unlike the title's implication of reckless obstinacy, Sun Ce is initially portrayed as broad-minded and adept at employing talent. Sun Jian's old subordinates and Sun Ce's brothers willingly followed his command. 81

Appearance

Sun Ce is an exceptionally imposing young commander, described as eight chi tall with heroic features. 81

  • Tall, standing eight chi 81
  • Heroic, distinguished facial features 81
  • Carries the bearing expected of the renowned Little Conqueror 81

Personality

Sun Ce is bold, proud, and intensely competitive. His early victories in Jiangdong leave him convinced that the other lords of the realm are beneath him; successive setbacks against Liu Bei, Lü Bu, and Qin Tian force him to recognize his own overconfidence. 161

He is capable of humility and self-reflection. After Zhou Yu's defeat at Zongyang, Sun Ce accepts the need for long-term strategy rather than celebrating immediate victories. He also accepts the strategic necessity of seeking Lü Bu's aid despite personally hating him. 173 240

His treatment of subordinates reveals both generosity and fierce loyalty. He values capable commanders, mourns those lost in battle, comforts Sun Fu after the fall of Flourishing Prosperity, and is devastated by Cheng Pu's sacrifice. 81 250 296

Sun Ce can also be brutal and vindictive. While suppressing unrest in Wu Commandery, he executed rebel leaders and implicated hundreds of scholars and clan members, spreading fear among Jiangdong's great families. 161 171

“Fortunately, worthy brother, you are here. Otherwise, I fear I would have lost the will to fight again!” 161

Abilities & Skills

Military Command

Sun Ce is a proven field commander who established Jiangdong through a series of campaigns and personally led armies in Jiujiang, Huainan, and the defense of Jiangdong. 73 81

  • Led 20,000 troops across the river into Jiujiang Commandery. 73
  • Captured four cities after entering Jiujiang, including Jundao City. 81
  • Reorganized his remaining forces after major defeats and established defensive lines along the Yangtze River. 238 251
  • Continued leading breakouts personally even when encircled at Jiangyin Road. 296

Personal Valor

Sun Ce is a courageous frontline combatant who personally engages powerful opponents rather than directing solely from the rear. 241 296

  • Fought Zhang Fei personally at Dragon Ridge. 241 242
  • Joined Cheng Pu in charging Liu Bei's encircling formation rather than immediately withdrawing. 296
  • His bravery could become a weakness; Zhang Fei gained the upper hand in their duel, and Sun Ce's valley ambush was exposed. 242

Tactical Adaptability

Although less comfortable with intricate schemes than Zhou Yu, Sun Ce can make sound operational decisions and recognize danger quickly. 92 249

  • Used concealed troops and favorable terrain in an attempted ambush at Dragon Ridge. 241
  • Retained control of a dam as a contingency to flood Shouchun or obstruct pursuit. 106
  • Recognized that Liu Bei's forged report had drawn him away from his main camp and immediately ordered a return. 249

Talent Recognition

Sun Ce values capable men and actively seeks to recruit them. 81 134

  • Won Li Shu's allegiance after capturing Jundao City. 81
  • Relied heavily on Zhou Yu's strategic judgment. 73 81

Story Role / Major Arcs

Break with Yuan Shu and the Jiujiang Campaign

After Yuan Shu proclaims himself emperor, Sun Ce severs ties with him. He marches north into Jiujiang while an attempted rebellion brews behind him in Wu Commandery; Zhou Yu joins him at Liyang, strengthening the campaign. 18 73

Sun Ce captures Jundao City and recruits Li Shu, but must choose between continuing toward Hefei or cooperating with Liu Bei against Yuan Shu. 81

Struggle for Shouchun

Sun Ce arrives at Shouchun to find Yuan Shu, Liu Bei, Lü Bu, and his own army competing for the city. Distrusting Liu Bei's proposal, he delays committing to it and investigates Liu Bei's intentions with Zhou Yu. 92

Although Sun Ce and Zhou Yu defeat Ji Ling, they lose heavily. While Sun Ce's army is occupied, Liu Bei and Lü Bu seize Shouchun, leaving Sun Ce with major casualties and no share of the victory. 103

Sun Ce then attempts to use Lü Bu against Liu Bei through Qin Song's embassy, but Lü Bu keeps Qin Song in the city as leverage. Sun Ce assaults Shouchun to rescue his envoy, only to fall into a trap laid by Liu Bei and Lü Bu. 109 111

The defeat costs Sun Ce soldiers, supplies, weapons, and officers. Overwhelmed by the losses, he breaks down in grief while retreating south with Zhou Yu. 111 112

Suppression of Jiangdong Unrest

With Qin Song lost to Lü Bu and Lu Su recruited by Liu Bei, Sun Ce returns to Jiangdong amid internal revolt. Zhou Yu persuades him to regain his resolve, and Sun Ce retakes Wu Commandery from Yan Baihu and allied rebels. 134 161

Sun Ce's reprisals are severe: rebel leaders are executed, and more than five hundred scholars and clan members are arrested or implicated. The crackdown terrifies the great clans and leaves lasting resentment in Jiangdong. 161 171

Sun Ce returns by sea, captures cities and ships, takes Liyang, breaches Liu Xun's camp, blocks Lu Su's fleet, and retakes Spring Valley. His surprise offensive exposes Liu Bei's intelligence gap. 171

Liu Bei's growing naval strength eventually devastates Jiangdong's fleet at Zongyang. Sun Ce responds by adopting a defensive strategy along the Yangtze River and rushing to Wuhu to personally console the ill Zhou Yu. 238 239

War for Flourishing Prosperity and Piling

When Liu Bei advances into Jiangdong, Sun Ce deploys at Flourishing Prosperity and confronts Zhang Fei at Dragon Ridge. His ambush is discovered, forcing a retreat despite his personal courage. 241 242

After Flourishing Prosperity and Spring Valley fall, Sun Ce recognizes Liu Bei's deception but returns too late to save his main camp. He reorganizes his remaining forces, appoints Zhou Yu Grand Commander of Eastern Wu, and establishes a desperate defensive line. 249 250 251

Final Defeat and Death

Liu Bei's forces ambush Sun Ce on Jiangyin Road. Betrayal by Gui Lan and Ding Fan throws his rear army into chaos, while Cheng Pu's reinforcements enable Sun Ce to escape the initial encirclement. 296

The battle destroys Sun Ce's core force. Cheng Pu and Lu Meng die, Jiang Qin and Sun Fu are captured, and only several dozen riders escort Sun Ce back to Piling. 297

With Piling doomed and his family unable to escape safely, Sun Ce chooses death after ordering Zhou Yu and Zhu Zhi to surrender in order to preserve his direct relatives and followers. His death ends the Sun family's rule in Jiangdong. 299 300 301
