Background / History
Zhang Fei had followed Liu Bei since the forces were raised against the Yellow Turbans. He and Guan Yu were Liu Bei's closest brothers-in-arms, sharing decades of campaigns, defeats, reunions, and ultimately the restoration of the realm. 945 953
His personal guard, the Yanyun Eighteen Riders, originated from his earliest days raising troops in Zhuo Commandery. Though members died and were replaced over time, each replacement had to come from Yan, excel at martial arts, horsemanship, and archery, and possess an exceptional tolerance for liquor. 303
Early in Liu Bei's service, Zhang Fei was widely regarded as a reckless brute whose main value was battlefield strength. He initially dismissed Lan Tian as a useful cook rather than a strategist, but gradually came to respect both Lan Tian's intellect and the value of military study. 42 421 898
Appearance
In his fifties, Zhang Fei remains a physically imposing warrior whose presence unsettles both allies and enemies. He is repeatedly identified by his dark face, leopard-like head, round eyes, and overwhelming battlefield aura. 471 731
- Black-faced, with bright, round eyes likened to bronze bells. 471 731
- Wields the Zhangba Serpent Spear, fighting with immense strength and speed. 97 471
- Rides the warhorse Wuzhui. 303 918
- Retains great physical power despite his age; Ma Chao finds his strength greater than Xu Chu's. 471
- By his fifties, white hair has appeared at his temples, though he remains vigorous and genial. 684
Personality
Zhang Fei is boisterous, direct, competitive, and intensely loyal to Liu Bei and Guan Yu. He enjoys wine, readily voices his frustrations, and has little patience for arrogance or deception. His temper can lead him to charge into danger or act before fully considering wider consequences. 50 304 471 478
Despite this reputation, he is not merely impulsive. Zhang Fei develops into a patient and observant commander who deliberately uses his rough image to deceive opponents. He can feign drunkenness, endure provocation without responding, and wait for an enemy to commit to a trap. 285 419 480
He respects capable scholars and strategists, especially Lan Tian, Zhuge Liang, and Pang Tong. He is also willing to learn from them, admitting his own shortcomings in strategy while incorporating lessons from the Lecture Hall of Martial Arts into his command style. 285 421 898
Zhang Fei is demanding but protective toward his soldiers. He ensures ordinary troops receive credit for merit, keeps campaign casualties low when possible, and gives clear orders that even a captured opponent must be released safely if he loses a fair duel. 736 737
Abilities & Skills
Martial Prowess
Zhang Fei is one of Liu Bei's foremost warriors, famed for the courage of “ten thousand men.” His Serpent Spear techniques combine overwhelming force, speed, and close-quarters control. 98 196
- Killed Chen Sun during Liu Bei's suppression of the Jiangxia rebellion. 60
- Defeated multiple officers of Lingling in succession, killing Li Shou and disarming or unhorsing his companions. 97
- Matched Ma Chao from dawn until noon in a martial contest, with neither warrior yielding. 471
- Easily defeated Cao Zhen and He Su outside Xiabian despite being over fifty. 478
- Captured Zhang Ren alive by pulling him from his horse with one hand, described as the highest-level skill in a duel between generals. 303
- Can still be endangered by superior numbers; Ma Chao had to break the Tiger and Leopard Cavalry's encirclement around him at Xiabian. 478
Tactical Command
Zhang Fei evolves from a straightforward shock commander into a general capable of deception, terrain use, ambushes, and logistical warfare.
- Led 1,500 men within Pang Tong's ambush against Zhang He's 4,000 troops, nearly destroying the enemy force and capturing supplies and horses. 170
- Feigned heavy drinking outside Jiang Prefecture to draw Yan Yan into a trap rather than storming the city and waste troops Lan Tian had helped recruit. 285 286
- Used the narrow terrain around Dangqu as a “weir to catch fish,” allowing Zhang He's larger force to enter before blocking its retreat and counterattacking. 419 421
- Remained calm under Cao Hong's attempted provocation at Xiabian, refusing to be lured out by insults. 480
- Shifted objectives after Xiabian fell, identifying Cao forces' trap at Gu Mountain and raiding Hechi County for supplies instead. 484
- Planned guerrilla operations against Cao Cao by concealing supplies in Qiang territory and dispatching small Qiang and Di detachments to confuse the enemy across Wudu. 505
- Treated guerrilla warfare as a core doctrine during his later Liang Province raids, operating with a highly coordinated elite cavalry force. 725
Leadership
Zhang Fei commands fierce loyalty from veteran troops and is effective at inspiring soldiers through personal courage and visible confidence.
- Commands the Yanyun Eighteen Riders, an elite bodyguard unit skilled beyond ordinary cavalry. 303
- Used thirty scouts to keep Zhang He's movements under constant observation during the Yi River ambush. 170
- His soldiers are accustomed to his shouting and harsh manner because he recognizes their battlefield contributions and has reduced losses during later campaigns. 736
- Earned Pang De's respect by giving him an opportunity for advancement rather than treating him as an outsider. 425
- Trusted Zhang Da with the deception used to lure Xiahou Mao from Wangyuan and later rewarded him for opening Jiangxia's gates. 729 564

Defense of Northern Yi and Wudu

Liu Bei later appoints Zhang Fei commander of the Wudu expedition, with Ma Chao as his deputy. Zhang Fei's force suffers setbacks at Xiabian and is forced into Di territory, but he adapts by raiding Hechi for supplies, retaking Xiabian, and turning Wudu into a guerrilla battlefield against Cao Cao. 472 484 505
