Background / History

Tony Stark was an arms dealer and the head of Stark Industries. During a trip through Afghanistan, militants targeted and abducted him; Hong Fei and Frank intervened in the situation, but Tony was subsequently held in their secret facility. A device was embedded in his chest, and he was coerced into producing the Jericho Missile. Instead, he constructed an Arc Reactor and began building the Mark I armor to escape. 6 9 11 12

Hong Fei and Frank extracted Tony's Arc Reactor data and used threats against Hong Fei to pressure him. Tony nevertheless developed enough trust in Hong Fei to seek his help in escaping. 9 11 After Obadiah Stane attempted to murder him, Tony learned that the man he regarded as an uncle and mentor had betrayed him. Hong Fei killed Obadiah, while the U.S. military recovered Tony and returned him to New York. 15

Following his return, Tony continued refining his armor technology. He publicly declared, “I am Iron Man,” revealing himself as the armored hero and openly challenging those responsible for his kidnapping. 31 His repeated clashes with Hong Fei became a major force behind his armor development, including multiple Anti-Master Hong designs. 26 62 125 166

Tony later suffered palladium poisoning from his Arc Reactor. Tony gradually recognizes that Iron Man's actions carry public and institutional consequences.
