Background / History

Tsunade is a direct granddaughter of Senju Hashirama and one of Uzumaki Mito's last grandchildren, alongside her brothers Shi Shu and Nawaki. Konoha regards the three as “imperial grandchildren” because of their lineage and Mito's immense standing in the village. Though Mito spoiled them outside training, her upbringing instilled in Tsunade a deep attachment to Konoha. 1

Before Shi Shu's disappearance, Tsunade felt her standing within the family being eclipsed by his extraordinary aptitude for sealing arts. Her irritation came from sibling rivalry rather than malice; Shi Shu considers her sharp-tongued but soft-hearted. 2

She later left Konoha and wandered the Ninja World, accompanied by Shizune. The deaths of Nawaki and her lover Dan Katō left her with lasting grief and hemophobia. 11 20 25

Shi Shu reunites with Tsunade near the Land of Hot Water after being missing for two decades within a sealed space. She immediately treats him as family, examines his health, and accepts Uchiha Hikari as a prospective member of the family despite Hikari's Uchiha heritage. 19 20

Personality

Tsunade combines a blunt, forceful manner with intense loyalty to those under her protection. She is quick to scold, order others about, or settle arguments through force, but she is also deeply attentive to the health and safety of Shi Shu, Hikari, Naruto, and the people placed in her care. 19 23 81 90

Her grief over Nawaki, Dan, and Shi Shu's disappearance contributed to her fear of blood and periods of emotional withdrawal. After Shi Shu comforts her following the Cloud Ninja incident, she deliberately cuts and heals her own palm, choosing to confront the fear rather than continue fleeing from it. 25
