Minato begins as the Ninja Academy's foremost talent and faces Qingyun in a public match. Though he has not yet mastered Flying Thunder God, his speed, kunai work, and Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique push Qingyun into relying on Armament Haki to win. Minato accepts the loss without resentment and immediately offers Qingyun his friendship. 7 8

Rather than graduate early alone, Minato postpones his graduation so he can form a team with Qingyun. Alongside Qingyun, he survives the academy's extreme graduation test against three Chunin instructors, later joining Senju Yoshihime on a team evaluated by Hatake Sakumo. 8 11 15
