"What are you doing?"
"Shouldn't we be leaving? You saw it too—there was nothing in that damn place."
Chuck grumbled as he followed behind Eisenhorn.
Unnoticed by everyone, an extremely tiny black beetle kept watching the humans.
The "person" observing everything through that black beetle made a move as well.
There was no ambush or sneak attack.
As Eisenhorn and the others walked down the road, a ghostly green light split the space ahead in two.
The bizarre sight instantly shoved all of Chuck's nonsense back down his throat.
The guards raised their weapons.
The Inquisitors prepared to draw upon Psychic Power.
Chuck froze for a moment, then aimed every weapon integrated into his Power Armor at the space ahead.
Beyond the green rift lay another space, one that no three-dimensional creature could describe with words or comprehend with its mind.
Then something stepped out from behind the green rift.
They saw a tall metal skeleton, a skeleton with a body as massive as a Primarch, and another skeleton carrying a gun and shield.
The sight of those suddenly appearing enemies made Chuck's skin crawl.
They had clearly been exposed long ago, but for some reason, these Necrons had not assassinated or ambushed them. Instead, they had openly stepped out.
The leading Necron seemed to be facing not enemies, but something else entirely. It slowly took a step forward, and an aged voice simulated by its vocal device entered the humans' ears. "My name is Zahedk... A duel, in the name of the Sautekh Dynasty."
Having dealt with Necrons before, Eisenhorn immediately realized that they had not been assassinated because they had encountered a Necron individual that madly adhered to the ancient warfare rituals of the Necrophage race.
By tradition, humans, as enemies, should feel grateful for not being assassinated
