But then Gaunt thought of it another way. He had stayed behind alone to deal with the pursuers.
If he had not stayed behind, would they all have been dragged down by the pursuers together?
Besides, Gaunt himself believed that the odds of powerful enemies ahead were not very high.

Followers of the Wych cult and Nightmare Cult, along with the twisted creations of the Blood Reavers—those were the true threats.
There was a Blood Reaver dwarf, less than a meter tall, who appeared to have shrunk himself. Beside him, he held the leash of a seven-meter-tall flesh construct.
Gaunt had no choice but to deal with it at full strength, only to be stabbed in the back by a Wych during the fight.
