Once Blackstone coverage reached the level the Void Dragon required, the two C'tan and the Space Marines were not deployed down there. Instead, they were transferred from the main fleet to a corner of the Iron Ring in an instant.
Those accompanying the C'tan were the absolute elite of the two Founding Chapters, but they did not need to follow the two C'tan into battle. They only needed to remain alert for any powerful Psykers who appeared, such as Ahriman.
Beyond that, they had no other mission.
"I can finally sense the structure of this Iron Ring." Saranoga consulted the Void Dragon only then. "We can dismantle this place at the structural level."
"Should we directly destroy the Iron Ring's structure, like smashing a building apart, or create a black hole as we did on Brumm?" the Void Dragon asked.
The Void Dragon felt that directly creating a black hole was impractical. The Brumm Campaign had ended with a massive black hole consuming everything because Brumm itself had been a relatively normal planet.
