Ch. 263Tyran's Nasty Toys

Fros and the Lamenters fought their way back through the Tyranid swarm, using dangerous Tyran equipment to cover their retreat. They reached the Angel Fortress’s core area, where the gates closed behind them.

  • Fros warned his men to watch for Blood Knights overcome by the Red Thirst and ordered Carron and the Blood Angels to withdraw while the Lamenters held the line.
  • A Tyrant and its guards attacked Fros and Carron, but a Tech-Sergeant crushed them with a Gravity Scepter.
  • The Tech-Sergeant opened a rift and used the Daughter of Storm’s Particle Lances to blast the advancing swarm, giving the Lamenters time to retreat.
  • Fros recognized Dante waiting outside the inner gates and noticed that the Blood Angels Chapter Master was trembling faintly.
  • The Tech-Sergeant threw a grenade that first created a zero-gravity zone and then unleashed a powerful repulsive force, hurling Fros, Carron, and the Tech-Sergeant through the gates as it blasted the pursuing bugs away.
  • The Lamenters and their allies withdrew into the fortress core, and the gates closed behind them.

Ch. 264Gift

Fros joined Dante’s council on Baal, where they discussed the fallen Stygian System, the Tyranid assault, and the threats facing the Imperium. Fros agreed to help defend Baal and revealed that the Lord of Tyran had supplied enough Terminator Armor and equipment for three Chapters.

  • Fros and the Lamenters’ company captains joined Dante, Mephiston, Dust, and other commanders in the council chamber.
  • Dust asked Fros about Cadia, and Fros reassured him that the world still stood.
  • Dante recounted how the Tyranids destroyed the Stygian fleet and defenses, while Necrons helped humanity before the system fell; he then described ordering Exterminatus to create a quarantine zone around Baal.
  • Fros told Mephiston that Cadia’s Blackstone Obelisks had suppressed psychic power, and Mephiston recalled that the change had prevented Khaban from entering the real universe.
  • Dante revealed that a Lictor had wounded him and killed neophytes while attacking the fortress’s Void Shield.
  • Fros agreed to join Baal’s defense and announced that the Lord of Tyran had provided Terminator Armor and equipment for three full-strength Chapters.

Ch. 265Worthy of Sanguinius's Blood

Fros revealed that the Weeping Legion had brought enough Terminator Armor to equip three full Chapters, and Dante decided how to distribute it among the defenders of Baal. After the council dispersed, Fros vowed that the Weeping Legion would stay and fight alongside Baal.

  • Fros told Dante and the Chapter Masters that the Tyran Sector had supplied enough Terminator Armor and equipment for three full Chapters, without asking for conditions.
  • Dante accepted the gift and assigned Terminator Armor to every Chapter’s First Company and its officers, reserving the remaining suits for battlefield replacements.
  • A Fleshrender Company Captain relinquished Terminator Armor, and Dante instead offered the Chapter fifty suits of Power Armor to be delivered to its Chapter Master for chosen warriors.
  • After the others left, Dante prepared to tell Fros how desperate the situation on Baal was, but Fros declared that the Weeping Legion would live and die with Baal.

Ch. 266The Open-Minded Inquisitor

The defenders held Baal against the Tyranids, but Fros and Carron suspected something was restraining the swarm. Fros was summoned to the council hall, where he reunited with Inquisitor Belona and the Weeping Legion’s lost Dreadnought, Kaelon.

  • Dante revised the defense plan to include the Weeping Legion and formed a teleporting force to strike Tyranid leaders.
  • After a month of fighting, Carron noticed the Tyranid attacks had not grown stronger, and Fros agreed that something was limiting the swarm.
  • Fros and Carron left the underground tunnel after the Blood Angels’ Second Company took over their defense post.
  • Fros saw a ship using a Dimension Engine vanish from orbit and hoped it belonged to the Tyran Navy.
  • Fros went to the council hall and found Belona speaking with Dante and the Weeping Legion’s captains.
  • Fros recognized the returning Dreadnought Kaelon, whom he had believed dead, and knelt before him.

Ch. 267At Any Cost

Inquisitor Belona proposed using two hundred Psykers to disrupt the swarm threatening Baal, and Dante agreed to a small-scale trial. Belona left to prepare, with Fros assigned to assist and watch her.

  • Fros learned that Belona had brought Kaelon back from the Deathwatch, and Kaelon reunited with his Lamenters comrades.
  • Belona told Dante and Fros that she had come to help Baal and had collected two hundred Psykers.
  • Mephiston warned that exploiting the Psykers could unleash daemons or cause a catastrophic psychic event.
  • Belona explained that a drug made from Psyker-derived ingredients would briefly amplify the Psykers’ power so she could deploy them in the Stygian System.
  • Mephiston said the plan might create a new Eye of Terror or kill every Psyker in the sector, though it would affect whatever controlled the swarm.
  • Dante approved a small-scale trial, and Fros agreed to assist Belona and keep watch over her.

Ch. 268Iron Man Will

The Master Control Intelligence tested the Iron Men’s new Nanite Swarm against the Tyranids on Stygia One, while the Hive Mind repeatedly adapted to counter it. After the Nanites consumed the planet’s available biomass, the Iron Men deployed their main forces, leaving the Hive Mind to judge that the swarm faced an unfavorable war of attrition.

  • The Master Control Intelligence sent an organic Nanite Swarm across Stygia One, where it devoured the planet’s organic matter and multiplied into a White Storm.
  • The Hive Mind bred tiny bugs that consumed the Nanites, prompting the Master Control Intelligence to replace them with metallic Nanites.
  • The Hive Mind bred Iron-eating Bugs, but the metallic Nanites infected them with a virus that caused newly bred Tyranids to develop sclerosis.
  • The Hive Mind destroyed contaminated digestion pools and Tyranids as the two sides’ microscopic forces fought until Stygia One’s available biomass was exhausted.
  • The Master Control Intelligence sent Nanites to consume the remaining Tyranids, and the Hive Mind added bioelectric chambers to its individuals to resist their attacks.
  • The Master Control Intelligence deployed Iron Men across Stygia One, and the Hive Mind judged their numbers, armor, and weapons superior to the swarm’s.

Ch. 269Iron Man vs. Tyranid Swarm

The Hive Mind chose to continue fighting in the Stygian System to gather information about the Iron Men, while the Master Control Intelligence also studied the Tyranids. The battle on Stygia One escalated as the Iron Men destroyed most of the Hormagaunts, and both sides deployed new tactics against each other.

  • The Hive Mind committed the swarm to an all-out war on Stygia One, while the Leviathan Iron Man Hive Ship produced more Iron Men.
  • Iron Men used Arc Weapons to annihilate vast numbers of Hormagaunts, and nano-swarms decomposed the biomass before Ripper Swarms could collect it.
  • Tyranid long-range war beasts fired shells filled with tiny bugs that gnawed into the Iron Men's metal bodies, prompting the Master Control Intelligence to revise its assessment of the swarm.
  • The Hive Mind stopped the long-range war beasts from firing to conserve biomass and sent pureblood Gene Stealers through underground tunnels to attack during the Arc Weapons' recharge interval.
  • The Master Control Intelligence deployed Giant Battle-suits, whose incendiary defenses filled the battlefield with flames and burned the attacking Gene Stealers.

Ch. 270Evolution Contest

The Hive Mind struggled against Iron Man’s forces in a war of attrition and used archived battle data to counter Tyranid tactics. Unable to secure an advantage through maneuver, it began testing new evolutionary paths and shifted the swarm toward underground attacks.

  • The Hive Mind flanked Iron Man’s forces with Tyranids, but Iron Man adapted and destroyed much of the swarm despite losing combat bodies.
  • The Master Control Intelligence imported Lord Commander Creed’s Battle of Cadia data and used it to predict and counter the Hive Mind’s tactics.
  • The Hive Mind concluded that Iron Man could restrict tactics and biomass recovery but could not prevent Tyranid evolution.
  • The Hive Mind ordered most Tyranids to retreat toward the digestion pools while the Brood Queen bred lightly armored Tyranids with weapons capable of severing Iron Man bodies.
  • The Hive Mind evolved Warrior Bugs and higher organisms toward full chitinous coverage and gave resource-gathering Tyranids the ability to consume metal.
  • The Tyranids began digging underground tunnels to approach Iron Man’s forces in concealment and delay exposure to Arc Weapons.

Ch. 271X8312

The Master Control Intelligence developed new weapons and combat units to counter the evolving Tyranids, then deployed a force of newly created Iron Men to hunt their Synapse Creatures. One unit, X8312, awakened with the name Heat Death and fought on the battlefield, where it discovered its unusual independent awareness and combat abilities.

  • The Master Control Intelligence planned sharper metal, agile battle-suits, Melta Weapons, and modified Nanite Swarms to counter the Tyranids’ adaptations.
  • After detecting a Warp-energy bio-ship, the Master Control Intelligence devised a decapitation tactic and gave selected Iron Men independent intelligence.
  • X8312 awakened in a production workshop, named itself Heat Death, and found that its fellow Iron Men did not respond to it.
  • Heat Death and one hundred thousand newly made Iron Men teleported into a battle against Tyranid forces.
  • Heat Death joined the fighting, vaporized an armored Warrior Bug with its Melta Weapon, and used its combat program to target multiple enemies accurately.

Ch. 272I Am Heat Death

Heat Death fought through a Tyranid assault, killed a Tyrant, and was destroyed by stronger enemies. It awakened in a new body in a production workshop, remembering its previous life and insisting it was different from the other numbered individuals.

  • Heat Death fought through artillery fire and bugs, then killed a thin bug that emerged from a hole before agile kin arrived to help.
  • Heat Death flanked a Tyrant and its guards, killed two guards, and tore the Tyrant's spine from its body.
  • Two winged Tyrants tore Heat Death's body apart, and a Bio-Titan later crushed its head while fighting nearby Giant Battle-suits.
  • Heat Death awakened in a dark production workshop and remembered its previous life after death.
  • Heat Death inspected its new, more agile body, which had four mechanical arms and an electronic eye.

Ch. 273Resurrection and Improvements

Heat Death led a decapitation strike against five Tyrants in the Stygian System, but the Hive Mind countered by sending a Brain Bug to destroy it. The Hive Mind then redirected its bio-ships toward Baal to accelerate the attack there.

  • Heat Death armed itself with several weapons, recruited six agile Iron Men, and began targeting Tyranid Synapse Creatures.
  • The Iron Men surrounded a Tyranid swarm in the mountains of Stygia One and Heat Death attacked its five Tyrants with its team.
  • Heat Death killed two Tyrants, but the remaining three overwhelmed its agile Iron Men and attacked it.
  • A Brain Bug used Psychic Power flames to melt Heat Death, and the Hive Mind ordered the Brain Bug to retreat.
  • The Hive Mind decided to dismantle bio-ships for more biomass and sent the remaining fleet toward Baal.

Ch. 274Taking a Day Off

The narrator went to look at an easy job that his dad had arranged, despite the low pay and long commute. He planned to check it out because it would not interfere with his writing.

  • The narrator went out to look for a job.
  • His dad said he had pulled some strings to find him an easy job that would not affect his writing.
  • The narrator noted that the pay was low and the job was far from home, but decided to check it out.

Ch. 275Desperate Situation

As the Tyranid assault on Baal intensified, Fros and Carron prepared to fight a mutated Bio-Titan whose bioelectric field disabled weapons and armor. Carron set out on a suicide mission with the Blood Angels First Company, while Fros stayed behind to clear them a path.

  • The Hive Mind concentrated most of its swarm forces on Baal, and a strengthened Bio-Titan advanced on the inner wall.
  • The Lamenters First Company Captain reported that missile attacks failed, and Fros ordered the Tech-Sergeant to prepare usable Talon weapons.
  • The Tech-Sergeant explained that Carron had requisitioned all the dimensional missiles.
  • Carron arrived with the Blood Angels First Company in trousers, carrying Power Swords, Bolter pistols, and dimensional missiles, and told Fros to leave the Bio-Titan to them.
  • Carron admitted that he had chosen the suicide attack himself, and Fros ordered his First Company Captain to clear a path for Carron.

Ch. 276It Has Arrived

As Baal faced a final battle against the Tyranids, Belona challenged Dante and Mephiston over her Psychic Power plan, winning an overwhelming vote to test it. Before preparations could begin, Carron reported that the Star God fragment from the Stygian System had arrived.

  • Dante gathered Baal's remaining leaders and declared he would lead them into one final battle against the Tyranids.
  • Belona confronted Dante for delaying her plan, and Mephiston explained that he had foreseen daemons invading Baal because of it.
  • Belona argued that the plan might let them defend Baal, and most of those present voted to carry it out despite Mephiston's objections.
  • Belona ordered the warriors on Baal Secundus and Baal Tertius recalled and everyone gathered in the fortress, but Mephiston questioned how they would then resist the Tyranids.
  • Carron entered the council chamber and told Dante that the powerful alien released by the Necrons in the Stygian System had arrived.

Ch. 277Don't Dig Things Up Carelessly

Burner Niladya Sa arrived at the fortress, destroyed the Tyranids threatening it, and demanded that Dante take it to The Forger. After learning the Blood Angels did not know The Forger and had dug up the dimensional missiles, Burner prepared to test them with a warning against careless excavation.

  • Burner Niladya Sa engulfed the Bio-Titan in flames, then incinerated the Tyranid swarm approaching the fortress.
  • Burner questioned the Blood Angels about their dimensional missiles and demanded to be taken to The Forger.
  • Dante confronted Burner and explained that he did not understand its references to The Forger, slaves, or kin.
  • Fros said the Blood Angels had dug the missiles out of a star system, and Burner recognized that their materials were less than two years old.
  • Burner retreated and unleashed lava and extreme heat, warning the defenders not to dig things up carelessly.

Ch. 278Methods

Belona persuaded Burner to stay and help the defenders of Angel Fortress by offering to guide it to the Talon Sector. After Burner repaired and strengthened the fortress’s Void Shields, Belona asked Dante to keep the Psychic Power plan secret, and he agreed.

  • Belona told Burner that the Talon Sector might know where the missiles came from and offered to guide it there if it helped them survive.
  • Burner went to Angel Fortress’s damaged Void Shields and repaired and reinforced them, protecting the fortress from direct Tyranid attacks.
  • Burner told the defenders to call for help if the Tyranids attacked and said they had to stay alive until they took it to the Talon Sector.
  • Belona asked Dante whether Burner’s help meant he no longer needed her Psychic Power plan, and Dante said the plan was too dangerous.
  • Belona asked Dante to keep the Psychic Power plan secret in return for persuading Burner to fight for them, and Dante agreed to a confidentiality agreement for the Blood Angels and their successor Chapters.

Ch. 279Operation to Retake the Outer Walls

Burner helped the defenders fight back the Tyranids and agreed to assist with retaking the fortress's outer perimeter in exchange for being taken to the Tyran Sector after the war. It left Fros wary of its motives but willing to accept its help.

  • Burner repaired the Void Shield and burned powerful Tyranid creatures attacking Fros's inner wall.
  • A Bio-Titan trapped Burner with tentacles, but Burner broke free in a massive explosion and cleared a space in the swarm.
  • Burner questioned Fros about the Forger and explained that it wanted to travel to the Tyran Sector after the war.
  • Burner said it had no hostile intentions toward the Tyran Sector, though Fros remained suspicious.
  • After Carron requested help retaking the outer perimeter, Burner agreed to cooperate if it could end the war faster and burn freely.

Ch. 280Disguise

Dante led a joint force of Space Marines beyond Baal’s inner wall to hunt Tyranid Synapse Creatures, while the Iron Men continued their conquest of the Stygian System. After receiving an emergency order to go to Baal, Heat Death disguised itself with an Imperial Aquila.

  • Dante joined the retaking operation and led Space Marines from several Chapters through the inner wall to destroy Tyranid Synapse Creatures.
  • The task force fought through the swarm with artillery and Burner’s support, and some Tyranids began to lose control as their Synapse Creatures fell.
  • On Stygian III, the Iron Men advanced against the Tyranids, and Heat Death rode the enormous Exterminator as it devastated the battlefield.
  • Heat Death killed a Tyrant with a printed shell, then received an order to proceed to Baal.
  • Before leaving for Baal, Heat Death printed an Imperial Aquila and hung it from its chest as a disguise.

Ch. 281A Gifted Apprentice

Iron Men reinforced the Space Marines on Baal as Mephiston used Belona’s gifted apprentice to locate Tyranid Synapse Creatures. The apprentice found a Hive Tyrant in a crashed vessel, but it sensed him, and Belona called for the ritual to stop.

  • A spacecraft landed amid the Tyranid swarm and teleported in one thousand standard Iron Man units and twenty agile Iron Men, who joined the battle.
  • Fros questioned the Tech-Sergeants about the machines, and they accepted them as allies after spotting Imperial emblems and Adeptus Mechanicus members among them.
  • Burner, the Space Marines, and the Iron Men killed Synapse Creatures until the Hive Mind concealed the survivors.
  • Belona told Dante that Mephiston’s Chief Librarian could locate Synapse Creatures, and Mephiston gave the Space Marines coordinates from beneath the council chamber.
  • Mephiston’s ritual let Belona’s apprentice find a Hive Tyrant in a crashed vessel, but the creature looked toward him, and Belona ordered the ritual stopped.

Ch. 282Subtle Relationship

Mephiston lifted the Psychic Power restraining Belona’s apprentice, who identified an unusual Tyranid Tyrant and agreed to search again. Meanwhile, Dante’s forces reclaimed ground around Angel Fortress after days of fighting, and Mephiston summoned him back with an important report.

  • Mephiston freed Belona’s apprentice from the Psychic Power, and the apprentice described a hidden Tyrant he had seen.
  • Belona’s apprentice agreed to use his Psychic Power again, and the priests prepared another ritual so he could survey the battlefield.
  • Dante refused Mephiston’s request to return during the battle and ordered the forces to drive the swarm away from Angel Fortress.
  • After five more days of fighting, the swarm within the fortress fell into chaos, and Dante’s combat force stopped to rest and eat.
  • Dante saw an image of the Primarch in the sky, then answered Mephiston’s summons and set off to return.
