Du Weilun stood before the desk, clutching a freshly printed report. He did not sit, his spine held straight as a rod.
"Weilun, the freshman assessment hasn't even begun yet. How do you have the time to come running to me?" Yan Shaozhe blew the foam off his tea and took a slow, deliberate sip.
Du Weilun took a deep breath and handed over the report.
"Dean, something major has happened. Today, during the class monitor selection for Freshman Class 9 in the Soul Fighting Arena, a Hell White Tiger appeared."
Yan Shaozhe's movements paused, and he set down his teapot.
"A Hell White Tiger? Someone from the Dai or Zhu families of the Star Luo Empire? That's hardly rare. Every generation has a few who come to our Shrek Academy; being able to perform a Martial Soul Fusion Skill is standard."
"But Dean, their Soul Power Levels... they exceeded our estimates."
Du Weilun swallowed hard.
"Dai Huabin is eleven. He was at level 32 when he registered, but today he is already at level 33. Zhu Lu has also broken through from level 25 to level 26."
"Level 33 at eleven years old?" Yan Shaozhe's expression finally shifted.
He stroked his beard, looking thoughtful.
"That is indeed a rare genius. Even in the Inner Court, this talent would be considered top-tier. Did this boy have some sort of fortuitous encounter?"
"That is not all."
Du Weilun's voice rose slightly as he pressed his hands against the edge of the desk.
"They were surrounded by the entire class in the arena, and when faced with a desperate situation, the Hell White Tiger they manifested grew wings."
Yan Shaozhe's hand trembled violently, causing his purple clay teapot to clatter against the desk with a dull thud.
Scalding tea splashed out, but he paid it no mind.
He stood up abruptly, his white robes fluttering despite the lack of wind.
"Wings? Are you certain you didn't see wrong?" Yan Shaozhe's voice was tight, his speech rapid.
"It is absolutely certain. I was watching from the sidelines."
Du Weilun nodded heavily.
"That pair of wings, one black and one white, spanned ten meters wide. Furthermore, they unleashed a brand new soul skill, Hell White Tiger Break, which shattered everyone's defenses in a single blow. The power reached the level of a Soul King."
Yan Shaozhe gripped the edge of the desk, taking a long moment to collect himself.
Ten thousand years.
The records of Shrek Academy clearly state that the God of War Dai Mubai and the Speed God Zhu Zhuqing, two of the original Shrek Seven Devils, only evolved wings on their Hell White Tiger after consuming immortal herbs and pushing the compatibility of their Martial Soul Fusion to the absolute limit.
And now, two eleven-year-old children, at the three-ring stage, had achieved this without the aid of immortal herbs.
"This is beyond what the word 'genius' can describe."
Yan Shaozhe paced back and forth across the room, his steps hurried.
"Perfect compatibility... this means that these two are not only a perfect match in terms of Martial Souls, but their souls have reached a state of deep resonance. In the history of Shrek, this is a rarity among rarities."
Du Weilun added from the side:
"I also noticed that the boy, Dai Huabin, has a very arrogant personality. He challenged the entire class and set the subjugation of that little girl from the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect as the wager. Such calculation and audacity are not at all like an eleven-year-old boy."
"Arrogance is fine. Without a backbone of pride, how can one be called a genius?"
Yan Shaozhe waved his hand, turned to the window, and pushed it open. On the outer courtyard's training field, many freshmen were walking in groups.
"Weilun," Yan Shaozhe said, suddenly turning back.
"Yes, Dean."
"Keep a close watch on this Dai Huabin. When the freshman assessment comes, I want to see his performance for myself."
Yan Shaozhe paused, his tone becoming very serious.
"Also, for the freshman assessment in three months, arrange it so that Dai Huabin and Zhu Lu compete as a pair!"
"Rest assured, Dean, I will handle the grouping for the freshman assessment personally," Du Weilun said.
The fact that Dai Huabin and Zhu Lu could manifest a mutated Hell White Tiger was a talent that could not be measured by conventional logic.
More importantly, these two were direct descendants of the White Tiger Duke Mansion and the Nether Duke Mansion.
For ten thousand years, these two great families of the Star Luo Empire had been closely aligned with Shrek Academy.
No matter how arrogant Dai Huabin's personality was or how overbearing his methods, his stance was beyond reproach.
As long as he was cultivated properly, he would undoubtedly become a pillar of the Martial Soul Department and, by extension, a pillar of Shrek Academy.
After Du Weilun left, Yan Shaozhe sat back down in his rosewood chair.
He picked up his teacup, blew away the steam, and felt a surge of satisfaction.
"An unexpected joy, indeed. It seems this generation's Shrek Seven Devils reserve team will have two more spots already spoken for."
Yan Shaozhe whispered to himself, his face full of delight.
At the same time, Shrek Plaza.
The midday sun was scorching, baking the ground until white steam rose from the surface.
Zhou Yi, the homeroom teacher of Class One, stood at the edge of the track wearing her unchanging grey robe, clutching a black pointer in her hand with a fierce, foul expression on her face.
"Did you all forget to eat today! If you're going to run this slowly, you might as well pack your bags and roll back home!"
Zhou Yi's voice echoed across the training field.
On the field, the freshmen of Class One were all wearing heavy iron vests, drenched in sweat, their footsteps unsteady like machines on the verge of falling apart.
Huo Yuhao carried his iron vest, gritting his teeth so hard it hurt; sweat blurred his vision, and he didn't even have the strength to wipe it away.
With every breath, his lungs burned like a wheezing bellows.
Zhou Yi's temper was outrageously high today.
That morning, she had just run into Mu Jin.
Mu Jin, who was usually suppressed by her, was positively glowing today, walking with a spring in her step.
After asking around, she learned that Mu Jin's class had produced two students capable of performing a Martial Soul Fusion Skill, and they had even defeated over twenty people in a challenge.
Zhou Yi's own class had no students capable of contending with such talent, and the more she thought about it, the angrier she became, eventually venting all her rage on the freshmen of Class One.
"Faster! The last person to finish gets expelled!" Zhou Yi's pointer cracked against the ground with a sharp, explosive sound.
The scene shifts back to Freshman Class 9.
The morning theory class had just ended.
To be honest, Mu Jin's lecture had been a complete mess; she spent the entire period suppressing her own ecstatic emotions, her mind nowhere near the textbook, focused entirely on singing the praises of Dai Huabin.
As soon as the bell rang, the students of Class 9 didn't dare move, all of them sneaking glances at Dai Huabin, who was sitting in the back row.
Ning Tian stood up from the front row and smoothed out her pale yellow pleated skirt.
She walked straight to Dai Huabin's desk, her gait elegant, carrying the composure of a great sect's heir in every gesture.
"Class Monitor, to celebrate your appointment, how about I treat you to lunch?"
Ning Tian extended the invitation with poise.
Dai Huabin was currently leaning lazily against his chair, his left hand idly playing with a lock of Zhu Lu's long hair.
Zhu Lu, like a well-fed cat, lay obediently on the desk beside him, letting him fiddle with her hair.
Hearing Ning Tian's words, Dai Huabin raised an eyebrow:
"Sure. But, I have quite a few people with me."
He spread his hands and gestured to the people around him.
