Background

Tsunade is one of Konoha’s Legendary Sannin and is regarded as the foremost medical ninja in the shinobi world. During the Second Shinobi World War, the deaths of her younger brother Nawaki and her lover Dan Katō caused her to develop hemophobia, leaving her unable to fight on the front lines. 31 83

Afterward, she traveled the shinobi world with Dan’s niece, Shizune. Gambling became her principal pastime, and persistent losses left her with extensive debts and a reputation as the “Great Sucker of the Shinobi World.” 31 91

Although unable to return to frontline combat during the Third Shinobi World War, Tsunade voluntarily returned to Konoha. She supported the war effort from the rear by guiding medical ninja and treating wounded shinobi. 31

The Senju Clan had already been dissolved by her uncle, with its remaining wealth distributed among its members. Tsunade therefore has little personal savings despite her lineage. 92

Appearance

Tsunade is a blonde woman with large, wavy hair and a notably imposing presence. She is usually depicted in loose clothing suited to comfort rather than formality.

Personality

She is also impulsive and financially irresponsible. When unable to pay for damage caused during her spar with Aragaki Yasushi, she attempted to leave Shizune behind as collateral while seeking money from Hiruzen. 91

Despite her rough behavior, Tsunade remains attached to Konoha and protective of those close to her. She returned during wartime to direct medical care, made sure Shizune would be treated properly while she was absent, and later warned Yasushi not to risk his life forcing Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode training. 31 91 102

Hiruzen considers having Tsunade train Aragaki Yasushi, partly because of her political legacy as Hashirama’s granddaughter and partly to preserve her medical techniques. Tsunade initially rejects the proposal, refusing to give up her freedom for a disciple. 83 89

Challenge at Yasushi’s Residence

Tsunade visits Yasushi at Hiruzen’s direction and agrees to a spar after he questions whether she is qualified to teach him. Her chakra-enhanced strength damages his courtyard, but Yasushi defeats her by overpowering her attacks and restraining her with Harden. 90 91

Debt-Based Training

Unable to pay for the damaged courtyard, Tsunade returns to Yasushi’s home with Shizune and begins living there while teaching him to offset the repair costs. Sage Mode Warning
