Queen of Chaos's offensive began quickly. The devils were both surprised and unsurprised by the demons' attack. They were surprised because, despite the demons' side having already descended into a complete mess of internal strife, someone had actually come to attack them. Yet it was unsurprising as well, because demons, whether as a whole or as individuals, were impossible to fathom. They often did things that left everyone utterly stunned.
Such as attacking the devils at a time like this. Yet Queen of Chaos's forces were not the only ones attacking the devils. Quite a few demons who had no idea what was going on completely ignored the fact that their rear was already a chaotic disaster and focused solely on attacking the devils.
The devils' response remained the same: respond to all changes by remaining unchanged. After all, they were the defending side, and in every sense, they had nothing to lose. Devil fortresses were nothing like demon fortresses. They possessed the finest city-defense systems in the entire universe. Devil fortresses were often like Russian nesting dolls, layered one inside another, with even the smallest fortress having at least six walls. Devils had an innate, vague sense of impending danger, and they were accustomed to protecting themselves behind layer upon layer of high walls.
The most insane of them all was the Bronze Citadel of Avernus in Baator. This fortress built of bronze was a crude, rigid city covering more than twenty square miles, famed for its thirty-two concentric ring walls. Each ring was lined with war machines. It was Baator's final line of defense against the Abyss, a city said to never fall, and this fortress-city was still constantly being expanded.
