Go!
When she was about a hundred meters away, she pushed the control stick down, kicked the side door open, and leaped out, rolling as she hugged her head.
Ugh—
The train, like a wild horse that had broken its reins, swept past her and slammed directly into the horde of Living Corpses, sending flesh and blood flying instantly as it crushed body after body.
A Boomer exploded on impact, a Tank was sent flying by the hundreds of tons of human-made machinery, and then the front of the train derailed after getting tangled in too many severed limbs, causing the trailing carriages to swing out sideways.
Bang, bang, bang...
The sound of impacts was continuous; twisted steel mixed with severed limbs formed a mountain of trash, blocking most of the tunnel completely.
[Player Hayasaka, you have become a Living Corpse Bane, reward: one enhancement point.]
Hayasaka Ai struggled to lift her head, rubbing her ankle, and froze for a moment upon hearing the strange voice.
Back at the river crossing, the crazily slicing Frontal Lobe Fragment had already claimed countless heads, and when combined with this train that had carved a path of blood, the title of "Bane" was well-deserved.
Hayasaka Ai had no time to glance at her personal panel, however, because one subway train wasn't enough to block the path completely, and Living Corpses were already squeezing through the gaps.
Fortunately, the subway entrance was only so large, and the number of Living Corpses pouring into the tunnel wasn't overwhelming; their strength hadn't been enhanced, so they couldn't do anything against the twisted steel.
"Hurry up and do it again, and we'll basically be safe."
Hayasaka Ai scrambled to her feet, too busy to be surprised by Yuki's meticulousness; that guy had investigated everything clearly when they first escaped into the tunnel, knowing these trains could be started.
She had only taken two steps when a foul, fishy stench entered her nostrils, and a pair of pitch-black giant claws magnified before her eyes.
The Witch ignored Yuki and had no intention of hunting Robert, setting her sights directly on her.
Swish—Bang!
Hayasaka Ai rolled to the side, watching as five marks were gouged into the concrete floor. A moment later, a swinging greatsword forced the Witch back, followed by the sound of gunfire like popping beans.
Li Dan headshot the Living Corpses crawling through the gaps one by one, while Yuki's back appeared in front of the girl, shielding her completely.
"I'll deal with the Witch, you keep going. The second one on the left is fully charged."
"Got it."
Without further exchange, Hayasaka Ai ran straight toward the other train, as if she had forgotten the abrasions all over her body.
Inside the tunnel, the battle suddenly became complex and intense. Aside from Robert, who was standing there at a loss with his gun, everyone was performing their duties.
Mai Sakurajima activated her trait and vanished silently; Li Dan pulled the trigger, never missing a shot, using the infinite ammo trait of his revolver to shoot down Living Corpse after Living Corpse; Yuki moved rapidly, covering Hayasaka Ai as she went to start the second subway train.
Utilizing the terrain, the battle reached a stalemate. Living Corpses on the surface poured in constantly, and the number of their own kind trampled to death far exceeded what the players were killing.
Living Corpses are hard to deal with once they possess intelligence. Neither Li Dan nor I can break away.
Yuki ran quickly, his eyes darting around.
Over at the dispatch room, the ground vibration became increasingly obvious; another wave of the horde was surging in, though the narrow stairs slowed the flow. Inside the tunnel, no more Living Corpses were squeezing through the gaps to throw their lives away, and things had quieted down slightly.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Soon, violent impact sounds reached his ears, shaking the pile of carriages incessantly. Yuki turned his head and saw sturdy shadows through the gaps.
Tanks—at least ten Tanks had gathered, using their immense strength to push aside the obstacle of steel and flesh. Their steel-like bodies were enough to withstand the revolver's potshots.
This forced Li Dan, who had wanted to take the opportunity to retreat, to continue suppressing them, roaring, "Come help! I can't hold them back!"
Help my ass. If I go up there, you'll just take the chance to slip away, won't you? Stay right there.
Yuki sneered. He had seen the power of that revolver; Li Dan was still hiding his true strength.
Calculating the Living Corpses and players together, Yuki only replied, "I'll handle the Witch. It's more efficient for you to wait for Hayasaka to start the train than for us to do it."
This reason left Li Dan speechless, as the Witch was indeed clever, focusing only on hunting Hayasaka Ai and preventing her from successfully starting the train.
On the right, the horde had already come down, and Robert couldn't get away.
Yuki rolled his eyes and saw Robert firing continuously. The room where the three had rested briefly was already packed with heads, and more Living Corpses were jammed by the stairwell door, their kin behind them crushing them into a bloody mess.
The fat man was overly heroic, acting as if he couldn't see the Living Corpses right in front of him, only focusing on shooting those squeezing through the door gap.
It was strange, but he wouldn't be able to hold them off for long.
Yuki made a judgment after one look, charging toward the Witch while growling.
"It's time to risk our lives! You still want to hold back!?"
There was no response, which meant one thing:
Li Dan still had an ace up his sleeve, planning to use it at the critical moment.
"Sorry, I don't plan on following your script." Yuki took a light breath, pulled a round grenade from his chest, and yanked the pin. "Robert, get out of the way!"
He threw it over, and Robert, who was about to be buried by Living Corpses, turned his head. There was no surprise in his eyes, only hatred.
"You idiot!"
Boom—
The grenade exploded, shrapnel and shockwaves scattering to blow over a dozen Living Corpses. But at the same time, it blew apart the Living Corpses jammed in the door. Like a dam breaking, the horde that had already filled the stairwell surged out all at once.
Come on, now you're the one blocked in the middle. Let's see how you hold back now.
Yuki had long since factored Li Dan's role into his calculations. The situation was simple: the barricade was teetering, and the horde surging from the management office had cut the team in half, with Li Dan positioned on the outermost edge.
Bang, bang, bang.
Robert didn't take the opportunity to retreat; instead, he fired desperately. But he was too weak to hold back the tide of corpses. Just then—
Was it her?
Out of the corner of his eye, Yuki caught a figure rushing out from the side. He glanced over and realized it was that unremarkable Housewife.
She still wore that dangerous hairstyle, her face deathly pale like a Living Corpse, while green hair sprouted from her body, beginning to spread outward.
It was a web—a thickening web that swept past Yuki like a gust of wind. She shot him a venomous glare before diving headlong into the horde.
BOOM—
The Housewife exploded. There was no blood or gore; instead, she transformed into a massive cloud of pale green mycelium.
It looked a bit like a Frontal Lobe Fragment. The mycelium grew wildly in an instant, yet it didn't slice through any of the Living Corpses. Instead, it burrowed into their flesh and sprouted new filaments, layering over one another until they filled the surrounding space. Soon, the gap in the management office was sealed as if by a pale green patch.
There were no gaps. The Living Corpses hammered against it frantically, their protruding palms visible, but they couldn't break through.
So you did have an ace up your sleeve.
Yuki turned his head, locking eyes with Li Dan on top of the carriage. The hatred in his gaze was palpable.
He didn't know how that Housewife had been turned into a remote-controlled bomb, but he understood that if Li Dan hadn't used it now, it would have been a killing blow later.
These emerald filaments were enough to fill the entire tunnel. There was a ninety percent chance Li Dan had intended to use this as a trump card, only to be forced into deploying it prematurely.
Seeing the hatred in Li Dan's eyes, Yuki felt no fear—only a sense of satisfaction.
Ha, turnabout is fair play!
This old schemer had been calculating against him all along, never intending to let him return. Well then, let's see who is more insidious, who is smarter.
In the end, I am one move ahead. Your skill set is far too predictable.
Yuki turned away. There was no time for "flirtatious glances" with Li Dan now, but thanks to his "help," Yuki could finally focus his target on the Witch.
Physical Enhancement.
He braced his arms and vaulted onto the carriage roof. Seeing the Witch in hot pursuit of Hayasaka Ai, he pulled out his shotgun and fired.
BANG!
A spray of steel shot whistled past Hayasaka Ai's back, forcing the two apart. The Witch leaped into the air, spinning her body, her claws lashing out toward Yuki's chest.
Screech—
The Chainsaw Sword and the claws struck sparks. By the light of the friction, Yuki caught a glimpse of a pair of tawny eyes. He raised his leg while drawing his blade.
Clang.
The claws aimed at his legs were parried by the blade. Just as the Chainsaw Sword drew closer, the Witch suddenly went limp, her petite frame rolling across the carriage roof, her claws carving through the metal ceiling like a knife through butter.
She still refused to engage Yuki head-on. Once she landed on the carriage, she pushed off with her legs, bolting straight for Hayasaka Ai's back. The blonde girl had just jumped down from the roof and managed to open the door to the driver's cabin.
The sound of air being torn apart came from behind. Hayasaka Ai had no intention of turning to fight; she pushed the door open and, without even looking back, thrust the pitch-black muzzle of her gun from under her arm.
BANG!!
The shotgun blast caused the Witch's body to bloom with blood, throwing her backward. Yuki, who had been sprinting to catch up, raised his blade high, swinging down to strike the monster.
Sparks flew as the metal floor was sliced in two, but Yuki paused for a split second. Before his strike could land, the Witch had already cut through the floor and ducked underneath.
Small, fast, and most importantly, smart!
Yuki licked his lips. In terms of raw combat power, the Witch certainly wasn't as fierce as a Tyrant, but she was incredibly cunning. Her target was clear: she knew the horde was the true killing blow.
"Keep going, I'll handle her."
Hayasaka Ai, standing at the cabin door, froze for a moment. She had guessed she was being targeted, and the piercing pain in her ankle warned her that a second impact would be fatal.
But there was no one else to help. She gritted her teeth.
"Right."
Yuki vaulted out the window. Looking down, he saw a blurred figure crawling beneath the train, occasionally sparking against the undercarriage.
She even knows how to sabotage the wheels!
Yuki suddenly found the bald Tyrant much more endearing. Strength and weakness were things you only knew after a fight, but this monster was like an eel, constantly dodging him.
He pulled out his shotgun and fired eight rounds under the carriage, finally forcing the Witch out from the other side.
"Drive!"
Woooo—
With a blast of the whistle, the train began to accelerate, flying past him. Yuki glanced back slightly to see the obstacle blocking the tunnel already teetering.
A dozen Tanks were colliding with it in unison; even a hundred tons of steel would buckle under that pressure. They had already smashed through one carriage, revealing a hole five or six meters wide. Then, using these iron-boned monsters as the vanguard, they squeezed their way in.
Like demons from hell, arms writhed and flailed, using brute force to widen the opening.
The speed wasn't enough—it couldn't be completely blocked!
Yuki immediately knew things were going south; the Witch had sabotaged the suspension, causing several wheels in the middle of the train to lock up, grinding against the tracks in a shower of bright sparks and preventing the train from reaching top speed.
On the other side, the Tanks that had charged through the breach were already standing on the tracks, forming a defensive line, ready to pit flesh and blood against cold steel.
"Li Dan! Are you trying to get us killed!?"
"Stop f*cking rushing me!" Li Dan felt a mouthful of bitter blood welling up in his chest; he truly just wanted to run away, yet he was forced to hold his nose and follow orders.
The Housewife had been tasked with sealing the retreat, but she had been forced to detonate early by a grenade.
Death Knell was his final trump card, but if he didn't use it, how was he supposed to escape?
Damn it, why was this brat so insidious?
Li Dan cursed, having no choice but to pull the trigger.
BANG!!!
The gunshot was as thunderous as a shockwave; the weapon in Li Dan's grip was no mere revolver, but a heavy cannon. The projectile struck a Living Corpse that even a Chainsaw Sword couldn't sever, and amidst the spray of gore, the shockwave sent it flying.
Hayasaka Ai repeated her old trick, leaping off the train the moment the gun fired, tucking her head and rolling with the momentum. From the corner of her eye, she saw the Tanks that had just been knocked down get struck head-on by the train.
SCREECH—
Amidst the teeth-grinding sound of twisting steel, the front of the train buckled, the entire locomotive derailed, and hundreds of tons of carriages were sent hurtling through the air.
Thud, thud, thud.
The hole that had been punched out earlier was mostly buried, the mangled carriages forming a small mountain. But as the saying goes, a thousand-mile embankment collapses from an ant hole; the Tanks that had been knocked away didn't charge back to fight to the death, but instead began tearing through the layers of steel plates from the inside.
They couldn't hold them back.
Like a trickling stream, Living Corpses constantly squeezed through the gaps, leaping onto the carriages, sprinting across the tracks, and even learning to duck their heads to avoid Li Dan's fire.
"It's your turn, you bastard!"
Having paid a massive price, he had finally found his chance to escape.
Li Dan decisively abandoned his firing position, his legs moving so fast they were almost a blur as he brushed past Yuki, who was standing at the end of the tunnel. If not for the fact that the horde was closing in and he still needed this bastard to draw their attention, he would have put a bullet through his head right then and there.
