Ch. 601A Reckoning in Two Breaths
Key plot points and events
- As the City of the Sky plunges toward the ground, Arata returns to confront Shinnō rather than flee. Xueli’s ice has frozen the city’s machinery, leaving no way to halt its fall.
- Arata gives Amaru a chance to speak to her former teacher. She pleads with Shinnō to reject the Zero-Tails’ influence and return with her, but he insists that his earlier, kinder self was the false one and declares his intention to rule the Ninja World through the Land of Sky.
- Shinnō draws on the Zero-Tails and his Regeneration Technique, opening all eight inner gates and transforming into a powerful, youthful fighter. He taunts Arata as the fortress continues to fall.
- Amaru recognizes that Shinnō will not come back. Saying goodbye, she accepts Arata’s decision to fight and lets go of the headscarf that once symbolized her devotion to her teacher.
- Arata uses Shisui’s Body Flicker Technique to attack. Shinnō’s first strike hits an illusion created by Arata’s Mirror Flower, Water Moon genjutsu. Arata cuts Shinnō’s back with an energy-wreathed kunai and calmly repeats that the fight will take “two breaths.”
Character developments
- Amaru moves from desperate hope to painful acceptance. Her farewell marks her release from the idealized image of Shinnō she had held onto.
- Shinnō reveals that his cruelty is not, in his view, merely the Zero-Tails’ corruption: he claims his former kindness was the real falsehood. His newly unleashed strength fuels his arrogance.
- Arata remains controlled and unswayed by Shinnō’s taunts. He shows that his return is driven both by the threat against him and by a desire to give Amaru her final chance to speak.
Significant themes
- Letting go: Amaru’s abandoned headscarf reflects her emotional break from her former teacher.
- Illusion and identity: Shinnō rejects the person Amaru remembers, while Arata’s genjutsu makes Shinnō’s confidence in his own senses unreliable.
- Arrogance versus composure: Shinnō mistakes overwhelming power for invincibility; Arata answers with precision rather than bravado.
- Time and consequence: The falling city makes every exchange urgent and leaves little room for hesitation.
Character interactions
- Arata and Shinnō trade taunts, with Shinnō trying to provoke Arata into proving the Uchiha’s reputation and Arata refusing to rise to the bait.
- Arata briefly steps aside so Amaru can appeal to Shinnō. Shinnō dismisses her plea, forcing her to accept that their relationship cannot be restored.
- After Amaru says goodbye, Arata moves directly into combat. Shinnō’s confidence is shaken when his attack passes through Arata’s illusion and Arata lands the first cut.
