Background / History

Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage and Mito Uzumaki's granddaughter. She inherited the Senju Clan's strong sensory aptitude, though neither she nor her brother Nawaki inherited Wood Release. Her status and family legacy give her access to the Senju Clan's inherited ninjutsu and make her a prominent figure in Konoha. 5 10 13

She first takes notice of Minato Namikaze during the Ninja Academy entrance examination, where his shuriken technique surprises her and the other examiners. After losing a wager on his match, she confronts him over the promised barbecue; learning that he is an orphan living on his own immediately softens her attitude. 1 4

Minato's mastery of all five basic nature affinities, Wood Release, and his newly named Light Release convinces Tsunade to take responsibility for his training. Mito supports the decision and urges Tsunade to pass down Hashirama's legacy. Minato formally becomes her disciple, then moves into her home with Nawaki for protection and training. 4 5 6 7

Although Tsunade begins with the Senju Clan's training scrolls, Minato's rapid progress repeatedly exceeds her expectations.
