When people are speechless, they really just want to laugh.
Mo Fan didn't even want to talk anymore. Zhao Kun San was like a clingy ghost that just wouldn't go away.
The training exercise was about to start, so he didn't have the energy to roast Zhao Kun San.
The Seed Class had a total of one hundred students, split into five teams.
Mo Fan, Jiang Yuan, Zhang Xiaohou, Zhou Min, Xu Zhaoting, and fifteen other students were grouped together. They had to trek thirty kilometers through the jungle to reach the mission site.
Honestly, the training wasn't that hard. The students just needed to show off their skills well enough, and the instructors would grade them secretly.
And so, all the students set off one after another.
Ten-plus days later.
With Jiang Yuan's deliberate interference, the group crossed the river valley, climbed over the cliffs, and became the first team to reach the mission location—Hundred Herbs Valley.
On the only path into the valley, grass vines and tree vines crisscrossed wildly, coiling over the rocks like giant pythons.
"Let's go. We'll head in and finish the mission," said Xu Zhaoting, the school's only Lightning element student besides Mo Fan.
With that, he led the classmates into the thicket of vines.
Jiang Yuan hung back, pulling Mo Fan and Zhang Xiaohou aside.
"Slow down. Something's off about these vines."
"Your gut feeling again?" Mo Fan thought back to the Star Sensing Stone during the Annual Assessment and was now more inclined to trust Jiang Yuan's instincts.
No sooner had he spoken than panicked screams from the girls rang out ahead.
Without warning, the vines on the ground started writhing, wrapping around the students' legs like real pythons, trying to trip them over.
Jiang Yuan didn't want to waste time here.
He quickly completed his Star Track connection, and a Water flow shielded the classmates under attack.
He shouted a warning: "These demon vines are afraid of Fire magic!"
Hearing that, Zhou Min stopped staring at the Water flow in front of her. Her Fire Star Track rapidly formed around her, wild fire elements ready to burst.
"Fire Seed—Scorch!"
But a voice beat her to it.
A ball of flame flew from Mo Fan's palm and landed on the demon vines.
Tongues of fire danced, and in an instant, a huge patch of vines was devoured by the flames. The remaining vines shrank back in terror, clearing an open path.
The overwhelming dominance of Fire over Plant was on full display.
"Mo Fan, you're awesome!"
"Mo Fan, so handsome!" a girl blurted out.
"What's so handsome about that?" Zhou Min muttered, not caring at all that she'd been upstaged. Her eyes couldn't help drifting toward the silent Jiang Yuan.
A guy like Jiang Yuan—protective and quiet—was the real kind of handsome, right?
Thinking back to how Jiang Yuan had shielded her just now, Zhou Min's heart pounded hard.
After dealing with the demon vines, the group pressed deeper into the valley.
A man in a straw hat cautiously poked his head out and jotted down notes on his scoreboard for Jiang Yuan and Mo Fan.
"Jiang Yuan and Mo Fan have really fast casting speeds. Especially Jiang Yuan—he's not far off from us instructors," Zhan Kong said in surprise after receiving the report.
At Snow Mountain Posthouse, most soldiers were only Beginner level mages.
"Chief Instructor, those two are the best students at our school," Xue Musheng chimed in.
Zhan Kong nodded and said to the other instructors, "Note down their names. Give them high marks."
"Boss, right now only their team has reached the nest entrance. What if they go in and get wiped out?" one instructor asked.
Originally, the plan was for several teams to arrive around the same time. They hadn't expected Jiang Yuan's team to be this fast.
Zhan Kong said flatly, "No worries. They won't dare go deep."
On the other side, Jiang Yuan and the others were making smooth progress, all the way to a raised cave entrance in the valley.
Looking at the spring water at the cave mouth, Mo Fan whispered to Jiang Yuan, "The water level's dropped a lot. Could there be more than one demon inside?"
Unlike the original timeline, Mo Fan should have joined the City Demon Hunting Squad after the training exercise. Now, he'd joined months early, and the squad's missions had made him extremely wary of demons.
Or rather, Mo Fan had always had sharp instincts when it came to being a hunter.
Jiang Yuan knew the reason and nodded. "Stay alert."
The One-eyed Magic Wolf in this training exercise wasn't a wild demon. It was the Ghost Wolf Beast—a summoned beast belonging to the Summoning System mage Bai Yang.
Bai Yang's other identity was actually a Gray-robed Cleric of the Black Vatican.
The Black Vatican assigned a Black Beast Demon to every Gray-robed Cleric. The reason the water level had dropped was because the Black Beast Demon and the Ghost Wolf Beast had drunk too much.
The group fumbled their way into the cave.
The Light element students finally proved useful. The Beginner level spell Radiance, practically a "light bulb," illuminated the cave clearly, the glow stretching deep into the cavern.
They discussed sending a Wind element student in to scout. Jiang Yuan stared into the cave, a faint stench drifting over.
"Mo Fan, something's coming." Jiang Yuan warned.
Mo Fan followed Jiang Yuan's gaze. In the pitch-black distance of the cave, a writhing shadow was stirring.
"Everyone, be careful!"
"Awooo~!"
A wolf's howl echoed through the cave, accompanied by a fierce demonic wind. It was like a typhoon, nearly knocking the group off balance.
It felt like being battered by crashing waves. Not only were their clothes and hair blown into disarray, but the mist-like water vapor in the cave also slapped them square in the face.
Jiang Yuan moved the fastest, avoiding the saliva sprayed by the demonic beast's roar.
"Awooo!!!!!!"
"A demon, it's a demon!"
Another wolf howl. The students' bodies went rigid, frozen in place.
The massive figure grew larger in their pupils, terror instantly seizing their hearts.
Only then did they understand how terrifying the demons in their textbooks truly were.
"Water Guard—Shield!"
Jiang Yuan struck first with a second-level Beginner spell. A shield formed from water flow blocked the Ghost Wolf Beast, while he shouted, "What are you standing around for?"
The shout snapped them awake. Except for Mo Fan, the others scattered like startled birds, frantically fleeing the cave.
"Brother Yuan, Brother Fan, run! Don't just stand there!" Zhang Xiaohou, even while escaping, turned back to drag his two big brothers along.
"Wind... Wind track... Damn it, I can't connect the Star Track." Zhang Xiaohou cursed. His pounding heart made it impossible to cast magic like usual.
The others were even worse—they didn't even have the courage to face the demon.
Zhang Xiaohou was panicking, but Mo Fan strolled over to Jiang Yuan with a grin, a Fire element Star Track flickering to life, ready to release at any moment.
"What's the plan? You hold off the One-eyed Magic Wolf while I go find the Bracelet inside, or do we take down the One-eyed Magic Wolf together first?"
"Triple Ice Spear!"
Jiang Yuan's actions already made the choice clear.
Mo Fan had partnered with him for so long that their coordination was seamless. The moment the ice spears appeared, he unleashed a Fire Seed like a serpent of flame, drawing the Ghost Wolf Beast's attention.
When they did missions together, even though Mo Fan was packed with destructive magic, Jiang Yuan usually played support, or they both acted as dual carries.
No help for it—Jiang Yuan's combat instincts were too strong. He could stay calm in any situation.
On a high ground outside the cave, Zhan Kong and the other teachers watched the students scatter like birds in terror, shaking their heads repeatedly.
These students had willpower as weak as paper.
Bai Yang was even clutching his stomach, laughing.
Suddenly, his face twisted. He grabbed his head, collapsed to the ground, and let out a scream.
"What's wrong?" Zhan Kong asked urgently, instinctively thinking something had happened in the cave.
Bai Yang lifted his head, eyes bloodshot, voice hoarse: "My Ghost Wolf Beast is dead!"
