Background and History
Suotuo City campus
In its earlier incarnation, Shrek Academy operated from a small village near Suotuo City. The campus was surrounded by a damaged wooden fence, marked by a worn plaque and green monster-head emblem, and contained low wooden buildings used as classrooms or dormitories. Its modest appearance shocked prospective students Tang San and Xiao Wu, who expected a renowned academy rather than a settlement of roughly one hundred households 92 98.
Flender, the Four-Eyed Owl, was the academy’s first dean. At this point, the academy had few permanent school buildings, few students, and little money; Flender supplemented its income through a shop in Suotuo City 92.
Shrek City campus
By the era of Huo Yuhao’s first enrollment, Shrek had become a ten-thousand-year institution with an undefeated legacy and a reputation as the continent’s foremost Soul Master academy 14. It occupied the eastern portion of Shrek City, a major commercial hub of more than two million residents. The academy’s placement facing the Star Dou Great Forest also gave it early-warning and defense responsibilities 16.
Shrek City’s east gate was reserved exclusively for academy use, while the city’s other gates remained open to ordinary citizens and merchants. During enrollment season, thousands of applicants gathered outside the academy gate under the supervision of Outer Court students 16.
Campus and Facilities
| Area | Description |
|---|---|
| East Gate | Restricted academy entrance staffed by second- and third-year Outer Court students in yellow uniforms 16. |
| Main Avenue | A broad bluestone road with landscaped vegetation leading into the academy grounds 17. |
| Statue Plaza | Contains ten granite statues, including statues of founders Flender, Yu Xiaogang, and Liu Erlong; Tang San’s statue is treated as a central symbol of academy glory and faith 17 18. |
| Lakeside Path and Sea God Lake | A major internal route running beside Sea God Lake toward Shrek Square 18. |
| Shrek Square | A large bluestone plaza capable of holding thousands for assemblies and physical training 18 49. |
| Teaching buildings | Buildings and uniforms are color-coded by grade. The black buildings serve sixth-year students as well as examination and research functions 18 31. |
| Soul Guidance Department | A relatively independent department housed in gray buildings north of the main teaching area 18. |
| Soul Fighting District | A paid combat venue in the northwest of the Martial Soul Department, staffed by referees and medical personnel. Victories earn academic credit required for promotion from fourth grade onward 61. |
| Assessment District | A 20,000-square-meter open assessment ground divided into fifty combat zones for freshman team battles 66. |
| Freshman dormitories | Huo Yuhao’s assigned Dormitory 110 was dusty, cramped, and furnished with crude, dilapidated furniture despite the academy’s prestige 21. |
Admissions and Education
Standard admission requirements
Applicants ordinarily had to be no older than twelve, possess at least level 15 Soul Power, and hold a recommendation letter from a main-city-level authority or major power within one of the three great empires 17.
The academy emphasizes practical combat ability over paper qualifications. Freshmen undergo a three-on-three team assessment; each team may include no more than one Power Attack-type Battle Soul Master. Nearly three hundred teams participate, but only the top 150 remain enrolled 65.
Shrek Token
The Shrek Token was created 120 years earlier to reward individuals who aided Shrek Academy during crises or made significant contributions to the continent’s Soul Master world. One hundred tokens were crafted from seven rare metals by a Titled Douluo, each carrying a unique mark that prevents forgery 15.
| Privilege | Details |
|---|---|
| Recognized holder | The academy recognizes the token rather than its bearer or provenance; its holder is treated as an honored guest and permanent friend 15 17. |
| Exemption | Grants exemption from all entrance examinations 15. |
| Waived requirements | Overrides conventional requirements for Soul Power, age, background, and recommendation letters 15. |
| Restriction | The token itself is non-transferable by name, but anyone arriving with it is entitled to its privileges 15. |
Huo Yuhao used a genuine Shrek Token to receive direct admission despite having only level 12 Soul Power and no city-lord recommendation letter. Teacher Wang Yan confirmed the token’s authenticity and arranged registration, class assignment, and resource allocation 15 17.
Training and advancement
- Physical education includes weighted running, with students using iron or chainmail vests during plaza training 49 50.
- Teachers generally give students an opportunity to take the freshman assessment before expulsion; Zhou Yi’s mass expulsions were described as an exceptional case rather than standard practice 50.
- Soul Fighting District victories become mandatory for advancement after fourth grade; moving from fourth to fifth grade requires at least ten same-grade victories 61.
- The academy’s Outer Court uses six grades and follows a harsh elimination system compared with the more relaxed environment of the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Master Academy 141.
Administration and Personnel

| Fan Yu | A key Soul Guidance Department figure and the academy’s youngest Level 8 Soul Engineer 43. |
Relationships
- Huo Yuhao — Former token-admitted freshman who led his team to the Freshman Assessment championship, then withdrew after being denied formal Core Disciple status due to his low Innate Soul Power 17 73 74.
- Sun Moon Imperial Soul Master Academy — Shrek’s principal tournament rival. Huo Yuhao later represented Sun Moon against Shrek after leaving the academy 140 153.
- Clear Sky Sect — Titan and Niu Tian intervened against Zhou Yi for mistreating Wang Dong, resulting in Zhou Yi’s removal from her posts 64.
- White Tiger Duke Mansion — Shrek later compensated the mansion after Dai Yueheng lost an arm during an Inspectorate mission; terms included three fifty-thousand-year soul bones and future preferential admission for the duke’s lineage 156 157.
Major Incidents
Huo Yuhao’s withdrawal
Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, and Xiao Xiao won the Freshman Assessment under Huo Yuhao’s command. Despite this result, the academy denied him a formal Core Disciple position and offered only a temporary reserve status. He refused the arrangement and voluntarily withdrew 73 153.
“How can a shallow shoal hide a dragon? Once it shakes its scales, it shall ascend to the ninth heaven.” — Huo Yuhao upon leaving Shrek Academy 153
Hand of Death disaster
While traveling through the Mingdou Mountain Range under Xuan Zi’s secret escort, Shrek’s starting and reserve teams encountered the Hand of Death Evil Soul Master group. Xuan Zi’s absence during the initial attack left students dead or severely injured by corpse poison 145 148.
The academy publicly reframed the incident as a heroic battle against a Soul Douluo-level Evil Soul Master, claiming five deaths and nine severe injuries while portraying Xuan Zi as arriving to eliminate the enemy 157. Elder Mu subsequently punished Xuan Zi and ordered students to commission Defensive Soul Tools, strengthening the Soul Guidance Department’s role within Shrek 150.
All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Tournament
Despite the losses from the Hand of Death incident, Shrek entered the tournament with a replacement Inner Court team containing four Soul Emperors and three Soul Kings 150 157. Its reputation was so dominant that opposing schools feared drawing Shrek in the opening round, and spectators repeatedly chanted the academy’s name throughout Star Luo Plaza 151.
Shrek reached the final against the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Master Academy, but Ma Xiaotao’s martial soul mutated into a Black Phoenix after being struck by the Sword of Judgment. The transformation caused public accusations that Shrek was cultivating an Evil Soul Master, while the academy attributed the mutation to the opposing soul guidance blade 157 158.
