History

Early Instability

The Riverlands are portrayed as vulnerable even before the main wars of the story. Their central location ensures that conflicts between great houses pass through them, leaving villages burned, people displaced, and corpses scattered across the countryside 2.

Wildlings from the Mountains of the Moon raid the eastern reaches until Suleiman leads farmers at Wailing River Valley, relieves Valleydeep Town, and drives the Mountain Clans back toward the Vale. His victory becomes widely known through the Riverlands and Vale, where he is called the “Black Lion of the Riverlands” 60 130.

Ironborn Invasion

The Ironborn invasion devastates the region. Raiders burn villages, defeat local armies, capture Letcher Castle, take Seaguard, and spread into the Three Rivers 212 214 230 238.

Riverland lords repeatedly fail to cooperate:

• Some knights refuse to fight when Lady Roslin seeks a commander against the Ironborn; Ser Elak leads the resulting force and is killed after it is routed 214.
