The Transylvanian Campaign ended in a crushing German-Austro-Hungarian defeat. Not only had the Alliance lost the Transylvanian Plateau, but the flames of war had spread to the Great Hungarian Plain, bringing a complete upheaval to the situation on the Southern Front.
At this moment, the pressure on Field Marshal August von Mackensen soared. There were no reasons in war—defeat was defeat! To politicians, the process did not matter, nor did the means; they cared only about the result!
Fortunately, Germany was now under military rule. The Hindenburg Government, led by Hindenburg himself, showed full understanding toward what had happened on the Southern Front.
After all, this had been caused by the disparity in strength between the two sides. Germany had invested no more than twenty percent of its military power on the Southern Front, along with an Austro-Hungarian Empire that had been badly drained. It was only natural that they could not win!
Without air superiority, getting bombed was unavoidable! Unless the entire German Air Force could be transferred to the Southern Front, relying on the Austro-Hungarian Air Force alone meant they were bound to suffer!
Even so, August von Mackensen was having a hard time. Understanding was one thing, but if they truly lost the Southern Front Campaign, he would become a sinner of the German Empire.
The Hindenburg Government had not replaced him—did that really mean he was so highly respected and trusted by everyone? Anyone with even a shred of political common sense would not believe that!
August von Mackensen knew perfectly well that the main reason he had kept his current position was that no one wanted to take over this mess.
Everyone capable knew that the Southern Front was no easy battlefield. One must not forget that the Russian Bear was still watching from the
