History
The Uchiha were one of Konoha's two founding clans, yet were politically isolated through their assignment to the Military Police Force. The role gave them visible authority while fostering resentment among civilians and other clans; Root surveillance and the scarcity of opportunities such as Anbu service deepened their mistrust of the village leadership 2 11.
Under the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato, relations temporarily improved. Fugaku considered the proposed recruitment of Uchiha youths into the Anbu a path toward eventual political influence, while Sora warned that this goodwill depended entirely on Minato remaining in power 2.
During the Night of the Nine-Tails, Sora exposed Root's attack on the clan and pushed Fugaku into resisting Danzō. After the confrontation, the Uchiha chose evacuation over remaining in Konoha under suspicion for the Nine-Tails' control; Sora prioritized moving the clan safely rather than aiding Minato's battle 6 12. The departure was permanent in practice: the clan demolished its compound, removed the contents of Naka Shrine, and left little for Konoha to reclaim 26.
In the Land of Whirlpools, the Uchiha rebuilt Uzushiogakure as the Flame Hidden Village. Fugaku handled internal administration while Sora and Shisui opened trade routes, sought resources, and recruited smaller clans such as the Fūma Clan 16 32 33. The clan also offered protection to surviving Uzumaki, though most initially distrusted the offer because the Uchiha had not been able to save Uzushiogakure before 53.
Kumogakure's invasion proved the clan's dramatic growth. The Uchiha repelled and devastated the invading force, leading outside observers to conclude that a single clan had destroyed the main force of a great hidden village 58 68.
Territory and Organization
- Naka River and Naka Shrine — The Uchiha's traditional territory lay along the Naka River in the Land of Fire. Sora promised the clan that they would return there, making conflict with Konoha inevitable 111.
- Flame Hidden Village — Rebuilt in the Land of Whirlpools and recognized by the local daimyō as a shinobi village led by Fugaku 16 53.
- Leadership structure — Fugaku remained clan head and managed routine affairs, while Sora directed external expansion and long-term strategy 16.
- Clan governance — The clan is not portrayed as a dictatorship; members retain substantial standing, and even Madara historically did not force clansmen to follow him when he left the village 2.
- Military culture — The Uchiha's historic reputation is that of a clan that answers attacks with total retaliation, making other clans reluctant to target their bloodline or members 29.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan's defining dōjutsu and the basis of its reputation across the shinobi world.
- Three-Tomoe Sharingan are treated as an immediate indicator of Jōnin-class combat capability 19.
- Users can read movements, apply visual genjutsu, and perceive combat information beyond ordinary ninja 19 30.
- Uchiha can exchange large amounts of information through ocular-power connections, allowing coordination with little or no verbal communication 36.
- The eyes impose severe strain on the body, particularly when awakened and used at a young age 16.
Mangekyō Sharingan
Several clan elites awaken Mangekyō Sharingan, producing a major leap in combat ability.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Yomotsu: A mental assault that overwhelms the target's mind after eye contact 61.
- Uchiha Shisui — Heavenly Deity: Inversion: Alters an opponent's perception and sense of position without functioning as conventional genjutsu 61.
- Uchiha Sora — Heavenly Imprint: Marks targets with a Mangekyō technique whose strength and authority can be adjusted between bearers 111 129.
- Susanoo: Sora manifests Susanoo while confronting Konoha's defenders over Naruto 114.
Fire Release and Weapon Combat
Uchiha combat doctrine prominently features Fire Release, bladed combat, and the integration of chakra into weapons.
- Sora develops a Fire Style Chakra Mode that enhances his strength, speed, and sword attacks 22 35.
- Sora and Shisui combine Fire Release for large-scale attacks, including the Great Dragon Fire Technique 36.
- Sora later develops Fire Dance Whirlwind, combining Fire and Wind Release to destroy Sasori's puppet forces 37.
- Training with Mifune gives Sora practical experience against high-speed swordsmanship and introduces him to the concept of “Pre-preemptive” combat 30.
Military Assets and Equipment
- Ninja Cats — Assisted the clan's evacuation and helped rebuild the Flame Hidden Village 12 16 26.
- Infinity Castle — Captured for use as a training ground, refuge, and emergency escape route for clan members 49.
- Demon recruits — Sora intends to use captured demons as opponents for training younger Uchiha 49.
- Rayquaza — Sora's summoned beast, whose energy can convert into chakra usable by him in battle 6.
- Ryuzuki — Sora's sword, reforged with the Snowmoon Family into a weapon comparable to Orochimaru's Sword of the Gathering Clouds of Heaven 67.
Notable Members
- Uchiha Sora — Strategist behind the evacuation from Konoha, the Flame Hidden Village's expansion, and the clan's later return campaign 12 16 111.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head who initially pursued reconciliation with Konoha, then supported the evacuation and led the Flame Hidden Village's formal administration 2 11 53.
- Uchiha Shisui — Sora's closest field partner; a Three-Tomoe prodigy who later awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan 3 55 61.
- Uchiha Itachi — Sent by Sora to infiltrate Konoha and Root, with Danzō as his eventual target 47.
- Uchiha Sasuke — One of Sora's disciples and a central younger-generation Uchiha 116 200.
- Uchiha Chō — Sora's eldest publicly known disciple 116.
Allies and Adversaries
- Konoha — The clan's former village. Discrimination, Root surveillance, and the Nine-Tails incident drove the Uchiha to evacuate; they later returned with a broad anti-Hokage coalition 11 14 147.
- Fūma Clan — Recruited by Sora after its members chose to join the Uchiha's new village rather than seek admission to Konoha 32 33.
- Uzumaki survivors — The Uchiha offered scattered Uzumaki protection and a return to the Land of Whirlpools 53.
- Land of Iron — Mifune ultimately agreed to provide resources after negotiations with Sora and Shisui, who sought chakra metal for the clan's armament 28 29.
- Kumogakure — A major enemy after Dodai's death and the subsequent invasion of the Flame Hidden Village 22 58.
- New Navy — Sora later brings a group of Uchiha clansmen to its headquarters in another world, marking the clan's expansion beyond the shinobi world 118.
Trivia
- The Uchiha fan crest is so recognizable that Sora and Shisui are immediately identified as Uchiha even while claiming not to represent a great nation 19.
- The clan's fearsome reputation is cited as a reason it never required a Hyūga-style curse mark to deter enemies from stealing its eyes 29.
- The Uchiha removed even the materials of Naka Shrine during their departure from Konoha, reflecting their refusal to leave their ancestral heritage behind 26.
