"Third."

"Itachi."

One had once been the Hokage.

The other had once been an Anbu.

Both had once held vital positions and borne heavy responsibilities. Time had passed, and when they met again, everything had changed.

They were no longer superior and subordinate, no longer burdened by their former responsibilities. They faced each other now as equals.

The whole world could curse Itachi Uchiha as a madman who slaughtered his entire clan, call him an ungrateful wretch, but Sarutobi Hiruzen alone had no right to do so.

Whether he claimed ignorance or blamed Danzo for overstepping his authority, the fact remained that during Sarutobi Hiruzen's tenure, his poor governance had led to the destruction of the Uchiha clan.

There was even a story circulating in the world:

The real Uchiha Qing had perished on the night of the clan massacre long ago. Lin Qing was a demon summoned from hell by the resentment of every Uchiha clansman.

Many people remained noncommittal after hearing the first half of the tale. But upon hearing the word "demon" in the latter half, they applauded and voiced their agreement, certain that was exactly what had happened.

Back to Sarutobi Hiruzen—he had rushed out in a hurry, wearing striped pajamas and not even shoes.

But the title of "Professor of Ninjutsu" spoke for itself. Standing there, his aged and gaunt body was like an impassable wall, blocking the two men's path.

"I owe you."

Sarutobi Hiruzen suddenly said, "I'm sorry, Itachi. I should have stopped Danzo back then."

Itachi's pupils constricted slightly. After a moment of silence, he said, "Is this your retirement speech? Lord Sarutobi, you're more fragile than I imagined."

"Do you regret it?" Sarutobi Hiruzen asked.

"Never."

As Itachi Uchiha spoke, a kunai slid from his sleeve and dropped into his palm.
