Azshara was a coastal region east of Ashenvale Forest and north of Durotar.
A river separated the primeval forest from the land.
The terrain beyond the river was peculiar, like a green ribbon laid across fractured cliffs, rising above an extension of the ivory beaches. Waves constantly rolled across the shallow coral sea and washed against the shore, while islands crowned with jagged reefs jutted from the water.
Winding reefs formed a coral labyrinth beneath the sea's surface, making passage through these waters all but impossible.
This was a shallow sea riddled with reefs, a graveyard for ships and a sailor's nightmare. No large vessel could reach this place.
Neither could small boats.
Before Azeroth split into several continents, this place had been part of Zin-Azshari, the Night Elf capital.
During the War of the Ancients, the Burning Legion destroyed the Elf capital. Then the Well of Eternity exploded, blasting Azeroth into several continents and countless islands, and tearing the capital apart.
Most of Zin-Azshari sank beneath the sea. A small portion became shattered shoals-the present-day Azshara.
The surviving Night Elves named this once-glorious place, now reduced to broken ruins, "Azshara" in remembrance of the Night Elf queen who had been seduced by demons and driven mad.
Some rumors claimed that the Dark Portal which had brought demons into Azeroth still existed, waiting silently on the seabed to be reopened someday. Others asserted that the ancient Great Sundering had awakened some creature deep in the ocean, which would eventually erupt amid a tsunami. Whichever speculation was true, the Night Elves agreed that this was a cursed place.
It truly was a cursed place. Naga were its main intelligent inhabitants, along with the Sea Giants who opposed them and the numerous Hydraxian Waterlords.
