Ser Forley Prester was the cousin of the Earl of Feastfires in the Westerlands. Short and lean, with pinched nostrils, a bald pate, and a gray-brown beard, he had a rather distinctive appearance.
Led by guards in blue robes, he crossed half the camp with his standard-bearer and entered the duke's tent.
Gryn sat alone behind a long table covered with a map of the Riverlands, while House Crabb's vassals stood on either side like loyal guards.
As the herald chanted his introduction, Ser Forley stopped before the long table, placed his right hand over his chest, and respectfully said, "Your Grace, Duke of the Eyrie, I am Forley Prester of Feastfires. On behalf of Ser Daven Lannister, Warden of the West, I offer you his greetings."
Duke Gryn leaned slightly against the armrest of his chair, casually studying Daven's envoy before muttering, "Daven... Warden of the West..."
After a pause, he said to the envoy, "You have interrupted my war council, Ser Prester."
Interrupted? To Ser Forley, Gryn's sudden accusation seemed rather "willful," and anger rose within him. Had he not been entrusted with the duty of an envoy, the difference in status between them would not have made him so sensitive to it.
Yet at this moment, he represented the Warden of the West.
Just as Ser Forley was about to speak, Gryn's voice reached him first. "Only because you are Cersei's vassals did I halt this most important war council and permit you an audience. As for that newly appointed Warden of the West..."
With a scoff, he continued, "I do look forward to seeing whether he can put on an impressive performance at Riverrun."
Glancing at Forley's clenched fist, Gryn waved a hand. "My time is valuable. State your purpose directly, Ser."
Ser Forley did his
