The Battle for the Dawn was the first battle against the White Walkers' invasion during the Long Night. Legend had it that the White Walkers came from the far north, raising the dead to fight for them. The Children of the Forest and their allies, the First Men, fought them bravely, only to suffer defeat after defeat. Later, Azor Ahai wielded "Lightbringer" and led mankind to victory.

After the White Walkers retreated to the Lands of Always Winter, Brandon the Builder raised the Wall out of Ice, gravel, and magic to resist their next invasion.

The prophecy claimed that after the long summer, the stars would bleed, and the White Walkers would descend upon the world once more. The prince of prophecy—Azor Ahai—would be reborn, leading mankind to overcome the darkness and bringing an endless long summer to the world.
