The High Sparrow's Interrogation

Cersei pressed her lips together, said no more, and silently climbed the rest of the stairs.

The place where the High Sparrow received Cersei was still the same heptagonal room as before. The rough faces of the Seven were carved into the stone walls, as if they were watching the people inside.

The gaunt, gray-haired High Sparrow sat beneath the face of The Father, studying Cersei as the septas led her in.

"Your Grace, I am pleased to see you again."

Upon hearing the High Sparrow's greeting, Cersei hurried forward and knelt before him.

"Your Holiness, when I was lost, the merciful Crone raised her lamp and guided me."

Cersei lowered her face with great reverence. Within her line of sight were the High Sparrow's rough, blackened bare feet, and she secretly gritted her teeth.

After an unknown amount of time, the High Sparrow's voice came from above. "I can feel your willingness to repent."

His kindly face watched Cersei's tangled hair. "The merciful Gods are watching you, Your Grace."

His gaze shifted to the side as he added, "Unella, record Her Grace's testimony."

Record her testimony?!

Cersei's eyes trembled slightly. She saw Septa Unella seated behind a small table nearby, unfolding a sheet of parchment and dipping a quill into ink.

She looked up at the High Sparrow and spoke cautiously. "High Septon, I pray that my confession will allow me to return to my son's side..."

Her eyes brimmed with tears. "...Please forgive a mother who dearly loves her child."

The High Sparrow looked gently down at the tearful Cersei and said slowly, "A mother will return to her child's side. Your Grace, confinement is part of repentance, as is testimony. Only by honestly admitting your sins may you receive the Gods' forgiveness."

Her
