After breakfast, Lu Heng took the initiative to walk over to Ya Fei and take her hand.
"I'll spend the whole day with you."
Ya Fei looked up at him, then patted the back of his hand with her other hand.
"Come on. Accompany me to inspect that new batch of medicinal herbs."
Lu Heng followed her toward the auction house. They walked side by side, their shadows stretching long across the ground.
That day, Lu Heng stayed by Ya Fei's side every step of the way.
In the morning, he helped her tally the medicinal herb inventory. At noon, they ate together in the stone pavilion in the back courtyard, and in the afternoon, he accompanied her as she handled several sets of auction house accounts.
Halfway through doing the accounts, Ya Fei simply leaned against his shoulder to rest for a while. Lu Heng stayed perfectly still and let her lean on him while he looked through the books and finished calculating the remaining figures for her.
At dusk, Ya Fei took him for a walk around the courtyard.
The setting sun stretched their shadows together until it was impossible to tell whose was whose.
"Little brother."
"Mm?"
Ya Fei stopped and turned around. Her crimson brocade robe swayed lightly in the evening breeze, making her seem both charming and soft.
"I want to have a child for you."
Lu Heng froze for a moment.
Ya Fei's tone was calm, as though she were merely discussing what to have for dinner. Yet the fingertips clutching Lu Heng's sleeve tightened slightly.
"You're going to the Black-Corner Region. Who knows how long you'll be gone? I want to... leave something behind."
Lu Heng fell silent for several seconds before reaching out and pulling her into his arms.
