The city lights came on.
After a busy day, Hong Kong Island, crowded with towering buildings, was entering the liveliest, noisiest time of the day.
Traffic crawled along, and pedestrians filled the streets with noise.
Kowloon Police Station headquarters, on Argyle Street in Ho Man Tin.
"Sir, if there's nothing else, I'll head off."
He Jia'an set a folder and a cup of coffee on Chen Guibin's desk, looking at him as if seeking permission.
"Go ahead."
Chen Guibin casually picked up the coffee He Jia'an had brought him and took a sip, then continued poring over the large stack of documents before him without looking up.
He Jia'an pressed his lips together and nodded. Seeing how intently Chen Guibin was working, he couldn't help adding, "Sir, you don't have to push yourself so hard. We'll crack that case sooner or later."
"I'm not looking into that one."
Chen Guibin shook his head, picked up the documents He Jia'an had set down, and started leafing through them. He held a pen in one hand and kept marking up a map of Hong Kong Island on the desk.
"Sir, do you have a new lead?" Hearing that, He Jia'an seemed to forget that he was off work for the evening. He immediately perked up.
"Cases don't happen in isolation. We looked into Black Skin Sha last time. He was Jiang Hongtai's right-hand man, the boss of a drug den. Besides, over the past month, six or seven people like Jiang Hongtai, bosses of drug dens, have died one after another."
Chen Guibin made another mark on the map, seemingly lost in thought. After a long pause, he suddenly came back to himself and glanced at He Jia'an. "What? You're still here? Didn't you say you were meeting an old classmate to
