The Basic Template was the only special template that could be upgraded. It was the source of the standard attributes for most players.

A boost of one to all stats per level might not seem like much, but it added up by the time you reached the maximum level. At max level, it could bring you close to the peak attributes of an ordinary human.

And while attributes like strength and constitution weren't worth much in the early game, intelligence and spirit were invaluable. These two attributes were the hardest to obtain in the game. Even genetic modifications rarely increased intelligence or spirit.

Most importantly, attributes gained from a template had no side effects, and they had the highest priority when attributes were combined.

Here's a simple example: say a certain genetic modification could raise all of a player's attributes to ten. Ten was the maximum value, so any attribute below ten would be raised to ten, while an attribute already at ten would be unaffected.

But attributes granted by a template didn't count toward that ten. They were added on
