"Knock, knock!"
They had arrived at the laboratory director's office, and Li Si pushed aside the jumble of thoughts that had been bubbling up in his mind.
Luna stayed outside to wait while he knocked on the office door.
The entire office was partitioned off with one-way glass, so no one could see inside from the outside.
Before long, someone opened the door. He was a slightly plump, elderly white man wearing reading glasses, with a white beard and hair and a somewhat kindly, almost goofy face. He looked quite amiable.
A name badge was pinned to his chest. The photo seemed to have been taken when he was young: it showed a chubby man with short, curly blond hair. The name printed on it was "Abner Aldrich."
"You're Mr. Lee Stein, right? Come in!"
Abner pulled the door open with a cheerful smile and ushered Li Si inside. "Please wait a moment. I have another guest here. Go ahead and sit wherever you like!"
"Sure!"
Li Si nodded to show that he didn't mind, then looked around the office.
There wasn't much to say about the furnishings. Aside from black leather sofas along both sides, there was only a desk and a few bookcases. There wasn't even a computer. The desk held nothing but a stainless-steel tumbler and a neatly stacked pile of paper files.
The view outside was quite good. The glass was one-way, allowing them to see the whole area from inside, including quite a few white-coated researchers passing by.
After sitting down on the nearby sofa, he finally had a chance to look at Abner and his guest.
The guest was a muscular white man with a shaved head and deeply tanned skin. He was wearing a U.S. Army uniform.
