In short, he was so engrossed in his experiments that he couldn't tear himself away. Aside from the occasional date with Gwen, he had almost no other entertainment.
Well, in truth, both dating and research counted as entertainment to him. Everyone was curious by nature, and exploring the unknown was, in itself, a way for humans to satisfy themselves. Emmm... dating was also a kind of biological research.
