Only ignorant people believed that taking a small bite of Xuanzang's flesh would grant immortality. That was merely a child's way of thinking.
If it were truly that easy, then every demon would come here to take a bite out of Xuanzang.
If immortality were so easy to achieve, what would all those cultivators be striving so bitterly for? Why would they painstakingly seek immortal medicines and refine pills? Why exhaust themselves like that?
The claim that Xuanzang's flesh granted immortality was merely describing one of its effects. To bring out that effect, the proper method was still needed.
For example, Xuanzang first had to be washed, then placed in a pot along with certain special herbs and boiled together. After that, special methods and talismans had to be used to activate it. Then, at an appropriate hour, one had to use one's magical power to steam-dry Xuanzang's flesh before eating it. Only then would it have the effect of granting immortality.
As for whether it could truly grant immortality in the end, whether one could live as long as heaven and earth, no one knew. It was only a rumor.
Yet even such an unsubstantiated claim drew the covetous gazes of countless demons. If immortality could be gained so easily, who would not want it?
