Xuanzang stepped forward and knocked on the main gate.
Before long, a middle-aged woman emerged from within. She wore splendid garments and dazzling jewels, carrying herself with grace and dignity. She appeared to be the mistress of this wealthy household.
"Greetings, benefactress. This humble monk pays his respects," Xuanzang said with a smile.
"So, you're a monk. What brings you to my home?" the middle-aged woman asked with a smile as well.
"This humble monk has come from the Tang Dynasty in the East and is traveling to Western Heaven in search of scriptures. Passing through this place, I wished to seek alms here. I wonder if you would permit it, benefactress?" Xuanzang said.
"Of course. Master, please come in. There are few people in our household—apart from my three daughters, there is only this humble woman. We have no servants either. Please rest in the hall for a moment while I prepare some vegetarian food," the woman said warmly. She seemed to be a kind-hearted person.
Xuanzang smiled and nodded. "Many thanks, benefactress."
Xuanzang waited alone in the hall. He did not wander about; instead, he recited scriptures for a while and let his mind drift.
Before long, the woman came out again. The vegetarian meal had already been prepared, and she had worked quite quickly.
"Master, please have a taste. I usually cook for myself at home, and I think it tastes rather good," the woman said with a smile.
Xuanzang nodded and began to eat.
"Benefactress, your cooking is truly remarkable. After only one bite, this humble monk found the flavor lingering endlessly. It is truly wonderful. I wonder if you have any wine here? Such delicious food paired with a cup of wine would be a rare pleasure indeed," Xuanzang said with a smile.
The woman
