Background / History
Chen Jie awakens in the body of Kanna, a ten-year-old Kirigakure Ninja Academy student, shortly before the village’s brutal graduation examination. Though initially overwhelmed by the memories of an unfamiliar life, he suppresses his fear and resolves to survive. 6 7
During the examination, Kanna is unable to defeat his assigned opponent and instead attempts to evade combat amid the wider chaos. Momochi Zabuza massacres the candidates; Kanna survives Zabuza’s otherwise fatal strike because his heart is on the right side of his chest. He is the only survivor besides Zabuza and spends several months hospitalized. 7 9 11
While recovering, Kanna discovers an internal System that grants a random ninjutsu opportunity each dawn. He can combine opportunities to draw higher-ranked techniques, though each technique is received as technical knowledge that he must personally learn. 9
Kanna later returns to his parents’ home in Kirigakure. His father’s maxims—“Neither coming nor going, neither death nor life” and “Only in the Center”—become an important influence on his developing understanding of a Ninja Way. 12 49 50
Appearance
Kanna is a dark-haired boy whose initially slight, hospital-bound appearance changes substantially after he acquires the Shikotsumyaku bloodline. 6 10 23
- Short black hair and bright, alert eyes. 6
- Well-defined facial features, though he initially often appears tense or troubled. 6
- A dark-red circular Highland tattoo manifests on his chest beneath his collarbone. 10
- His Shikotsumyaku produces an unusually dense, robust body; he becomes taller than Ringo Ameyuri despite their similar age. 23 29
- Can force bones to protrude beneath his skin for defense, including around his throat. 31
Personality
Kanna is patient, calm, and unusually accepting of sudden changes in circumstance. Rather than dwelling on his transmigration or the massacre of his classmates, he focuses on understanding the System, cultivating chakra, and securing enough power to survive. 9 10 15
His desire for strength can become obsessive. He considers acquiring powerful bloodlines and the bodies or abilities of major shinobi, though he is capable of recognizing when a plan is too dangerous or premature. 17 20 23
Under pressure, Kanna can be calculating and ruthless. When confronted by the Security Force, he wounds himself and threatens to exploit his frail medical reputation to deter them; during the Chūnin Exam, his confidence in his own strength leads him to attack a larger group alone. 31 45
Despite this harshness, he feels guilt when his actions harm Ringo Ameyuri or result in the deaths of fellow examinees. He eventually resolves to use overwhelming force more sparingly against his own village’s people. 33 46 47
Abilities & Skills
System Lottery
Kanna’s System provides ninjutsu formulas, chakra-circulation methods, and usage knowledge.
- Receives one random low-tier ninjutsu opportunity each dawn. 9
- Can exchange accumulated opportunities for higher-ranked draws, up to Super S-rank. 9
- Drawn techniques are not automatically mastered; Kanna must study and practice them unless Highland is used. 9 10
Highland
Highland is Kanna’s tattoo-like skill-slot function, named after the Shinto realm of the gods.
- Loads a ninjutsu into a chest-mounted seal and executes its chakra circulation independently of Kanna’s normal body pathways. 10 18
- Lets him use techniques he cannot yet fully analyze or perform normally. 10
- Originally supports only one loaded ninjutsu at a time. 36
- Evolves after the Chūnin Exam massacre, creating multiple additional slots for lower-ranked techniques. 46
- Requires substantial chakra to maintain and operate. 10 46
Chakra Control and Water Style
Kanna specializes in chakra refinement and Water Style manipulation.
- Reaches chakra shape transformation and can perform preliminary nature transformation through hand seals. 24
- Learns tree-climbing and water-walking under Morishita Mai’s guidance. 19
- Uses the Third Mizukage’s chakra circulation formula through Highland, creating a near-perfect chakra network despite his dextrocardia. 27 28
- Can perform Water Style techniques without hand seals after mastering the formula. 28
- Uses Water Style: Water Body Flicker to travel rapidly through Kirigakure’s wet terrain. 14 43
- Uses Water Style: Water Cannonball as a high-impact ranged attack; its rotating force can overwhelm weapon defenses. 37 44
- Learns Water Style: Syrup Capture Field as a binding technique. 37
Flying Thunder God Technique
An S-rank space-time ninjutsu drawn through the System.
- Teleports to prepared coordinates and is initially used to move from Kanna’s balcony to the ground. 14 17
- Kanna places markings across Kirigakure using carved practice kunai. 19
- Preserves the user’s momentum through teleportation, leaving Kanna physically strained after arrival. 19
- Requires him to manually paint or carve markings; he lacks the reaction speed for elite close-quarters Flying Thunder God combat. 19 47
- His modified markings use the characters “Above” and “Below.” 48
Shinra Tensei
An S-rank repulsion technique associated with the Deva Path.
- Produces a powerful repulsive force and can be adjusted in range and intensity. 20 47
- Is far more chakra-intensive for Kanna than it would be for a true Rinnegan user. 20
- Sends Hozuki Mangetsu flying during their confrontation at the Juvenile Correction Center. 33
- Accidentally kills twelve Chūnin Exam opponents when Kanna misjudges its force against Genin-level chakra. 46 47
Shikotsumyaku
Kanna acquires the Kaguya Clan’s bone-manipulation bloodline by absorbing bone powder from a stolen Bone Magatama.
- Enhances his bones, flesh, physical strength, and chakra-refinement speed. 22 23
- Allows him to grow defensive bone structures beneath his skin. 31
- Lets him compress his bones, producing a dense and exceptionally heavy skeletal structure. 23
- Grants him the Dance of the Larch. 22
Taijutsu and Swordsmanship
Kanna develops close-combat ability alongside his ninjutsu.
- Uses the Gentle Fist Art: Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, though he lacks the Byakugan needed to precisely identify chakra points. 23
- Applies variants such as Pulse-Sealing and Vibration styles to damage internal targets. 24
- Studies swordsmanship and the Silent Killing Technique under Gotō Shinnosuke. 35 36
- Is evaluated at A-rank in taijutsu during the Chūnin Exam. 45
Other Acquired Techniques
- Sage Art: Rasengan — An S-rank technique whose Sage Art principles complement Kanna’s chakra-refinement method, though it requires Highland’s support. 36
- Double Lariat — A two-person Lightning Style attack requiring complete trust and synchronized chakra with a partner. 36
- Human Path: Mind Reading — Extracts memories and can forcibly strip a target’s soul; Kanna resolves to use it sparingly after testing it on a stray dog proves fatal. 36 48
- White Secret Technique: Chikamatsu Ten Puppets — A high-level puppetry manual based around controlling ten puppets. 36
- Shadow Possession Jutsu and Summoning Jutsu — Acquired, but not yet practical options for Kanna at the time. 37
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kirigakure forehead protector, received upon leaving the hospital as a qualified Genin. 11
- Practice kunai carved with Flying Thunder God coordinates. 19
- Bone Magatama from the Kaguya Clan, used to obtain Shikotsumyaku. 22
- Chūnin Exam headset and locator, issued for his role as a Pursuer. 41
Relationships
- Kanna Tokiomi — Father; the Third Mizukage’s aide. Initially strict and disappointed in Kanna, but later acknowledges his growth, supports his training, and handles the consequences of the Chūnin Exam killings. 12 13 27 47
- Morishita Mai — Mother; a retired Jonin who offers emotional support, purchases Kanna’s training kunai, and teaches him tree-climbing and water-walking. 10 19 24
- Momochi Zabuza — The attacker whose massacre Kanna survives through dextrocardia. Kanna later works alongside him as a fellow Pursuer in the Chūnin Exam. 9 41
- Ringo Ameyuri — Initially a hostile rival, then Kanna’s fellow Juvenile Correction Center inmate and sword-training partner. Their relationship develops into mutual respect and roughly even sparring ability. 29 32 36
- Gotō Shinnosuke — Juvenile Correction Center director and swordsmanship mentor who teaches Kanna the importance of understanding one’s own Way. 35 49
- Third Mizukage — Grants Kanna access to his personal chakra-refinement formula, creating a teacher-student obligation Kanna intends to repay. 21 27
- Shiro Kamimizu — Kirigakure Jonin who spars with Kanna and praises his chakra control as genius-level. 28 29
- Hozuki Mangetsu — Powerful Genin who provokes Kanna at the Juvenile Correction Center and survives Shinra Tensei through Hydrification. 33
Story Role / Major Arcs
Academy Graduation and Survival
Kanna transmigrates into his new body during Kirigakure’s graduation examination. Unable to fight effectively at first, he survives Zabuza’s massacre through the accidental protection of his right-sided heart. 6 7 9
Hospital Recovery and Independent Training
After awakening the System and Highland in the hospital, Kanna chooses to avoid ordinary missions and instead build his chakra reserves, study ninjutsu, and prepare for future threats. 9 10 13 15
Bloodline Acquisition
Using New Year visits to enter the Kaguya Clan’s settlement, Kanna steals material from a Bone Magatama and gains Shikotsumyaku, greatly improving his physique and combat confidence. 21 22 23
Juvenile Correction Center
Kanna’s confrontation with the Security Force leads to his confinement. There he meets Ringo Ameyuri, clashes with Hozuki Mangetsu, and receives swordsmanship training from Shinnosuke. 31 32 33 35 36
Chūnin Exam
Assigned as a Pursuer alongside Zabuza, Ringo, and Fuyuki Sanzenryo, Kanna disregards the intended stealth strategy and attacks a twelve-person opponent group alone. He defeats them with Water Style, Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, and Shinra Tensei. 41 43 44 45
Kanna’s use of Shinra Tensei kills all twelve opponents, unintentionally triggering Highland’s evolution. He leaves the exam site early after being warned not to cause further deaths, then confesses the incident to Tokiomi. 46 47
