Background / History
At age nine, Zabuza took Kirigakure's graduation examination, in which paired students were required to fight and only survivors could pass. Rather than limit himself to his assigned opponent, he killed his own friend in a single sword stroke and proceeded to massacre more than one hundred examinees. Kanna was the only apparent survivor, though this was because his dextrocardia caused Zabuza's strike through the left chest to miss his heart 7 8 9 13.
The slaughter shocked Kirigakure and produced the lowest recorded survival rate for a graduating class. Although relatives of the victims resented him, much of the village praised him as a genius; the incident also became the impetus for reforms to Kirigakure's brutal examination system 7 25 37.
Following the massacre, Zabuza joined the Anbu and became publicly known enough that concealing his identity was considered pointless. He later entered the reformed Chūnin Exams at his own request, intending to sweep the field as he had during graduation 10 18 38.
Appearance
Zabuza was first seen as a young boy with his face wrapped in white bandages, short spiked hair, and a long sword carried on his back. Two years later, he appeared as a tall black-haired youth with sparse eyebrows, standing a head above most examinees 7 38.
- Carries a long sword as his primary weapon 7 38.
- Has cold, indifferent eyes and an intimidating presence during combat 8 9.
- Initially concealed much of his face beneath white bandages 7 8.
Personality
Zabuza is intensely proud, ruthless, and dismissive of weakness. During the graduation examination, he treated friends, fleeing students, and wounded opponents alike as targets, ensuring fallen examinees were dead before moving on 7 8.
He prefers individual strength over cooperation. When Kanna proposed an alliance among the Pursuers, Zabuza rejected it outright, declaring that he alone was sufficient and immediately demanding Fuyuki Sanzenryo's tag 42.
Despite his brutality, he recognizes capable opponents. He allowed Kanna to copy his written-exam answers because he wanted the survivor of his earlier attack to reach the practical stage and challenge him 39. He also acknowledged Fuyuki as qualified to face him after witnessing his Water Release techniques 42.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Zabuza is a highly skilled swordsman whose name is explained as meaning “never cutting twice,” reflecting his preference for decisive, fatal strikes 9.
- Killed his former friend with a single downward swing from skull to abdomen 7.
- Used speed and precision beyond his classmates’ ability to perceive or counter; Kanna described his taijutsu as rare even among Chūnin 8.
- Routinely targets vital points and pursues fleeing opponents 8 13.
- Pressured Fuyuki with direct blade attacks and coordinated strikes alongside a Water Clone 42.
Water Release
Zabuza is identified as a master of Water Release and uses water-based techniques to control the battlefield 42.
- Water Clone Technique — created a Water Clone to attack Fuyuki from behind while advancing himself from the front 42.
- Hidden Mist Technique — filled the area with dense mist, obscuring visibility and creating an environment favorable to assassination 42.
- His Water Clone possessed only a fraction of his original strength and could be broken by sufficient force 42.
Silent Killing Technique
Zabuza employs Kirigakure’s signature assassination art in conjunction with Hidden Mist, concealing his position while threatening targets from within the fog 42.
- Uses mist to remove opponents’ visual awareness and make his voice difficult to locate 42.
- Kanna considered the mist-filled environment sufficiently dangerous to withdraw rather than remain near Zabuza 42.
Anbu Training and Intelligence
As an Anbu member, Zabuza possesses knowledge beyond ordinary genin-level examination material 38 41.
- Correctly answered the difficult written-exam questions that other candidates copied 39 40.
- Recognized the hidden question’s intent and reported others while taking responsibility for cheating 40.
- Was selected as a Pursuer during the field examination 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Long sword — his main weapon, used throughout the graduation massacre and Chūnin Exams 7 38 42.
- Anbu mask — wore one when discovered at the graduation exam site 9.
Relationships
- Kanna — Zabuza seemingly killed Kanna during the graduation massacre, but Kanna survived because of dextrocardia. Years later, Zabuza recognized him during the written exam and welcomed a future challenge 8 9 39.
- Fuyuki Sanzenryo — fellow Pursuer and adversary during the Chūnin Exams. Zabuza antagonized him by calling him Yagura’s subordinate, provoking a clash 41 42 43.
- Ringo Ameyuri — fellow Chūnin Exam candidate and Pursuer; she considers him unimpressive compared with Kanna’s expectations, though neither directly fights the other in the documented exam stages 38 41.
- Suikazan Fuguki — one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen who ordered Zabuza to forfeit his match against Kanna; Zabuza complied under the shinobi rule of obedience to superiors 49 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Graduation Examination Massacre
Zabuza transforms Kirigakure’s graduation test into a massacre, killing over one hundred students and leaving Kanna as the sole apparent survivor. His actions expose the consequences of the village’s “only survivors pass” system 7 8 9.
Chūnin Exam Written Test
Participating as an Anbu representative, Zabuza becomes the central source of correct answers for examinees who successfully copy from him. He permits Kanna to do so, framing the practical exam as an opportunity for their rematch 38 39 40.
Pursuer Field Exercise
Assigned as a Pursuer alongside Kanna, Fuyuki, and Ringo, Zabuza rejects cooperation and attacks Fuyuki for his tag. He employs Water Clone, Hidden Mist, and Silent Killing techniques after Fuyuki demonstrates defensive Water Release abilities 41 42.
Final Examination Forfeit
Zabuza is scheduled to face Kanna in the first round of the final combat examination. After pressure from Suikazan Fuguki, he forfeits without entering the arena, giving Kanna the victory 49 50.
Notable Quotes
“However, goodbye, my friend.” 7
“Too weak! What, is there not a single one of you who can land a hit on me?” 8
“I am enough on my own, just like that graduation exam.” 42
Trivia
- Zabuza’s graduation-exam massacre led Kirigakure to reform its examination system, making later exams less lethal 25 37.
- Kanna’s survival was not intentional: Zabuza struck his left chest, unaware that Kanna’s heart was on the right side 9.
- Though he initially intended to fight Kanna in the practical exam, Zabuza ultimately forfeited before their scheduled match 39 50.
