Hozuki Suigetsu was, in the original storyline, one of the third generation of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of Kirigakure in the Land of Water, and the third wielder of the Kubikiribōchō. As a member of the Hozuki Clan, he could use secret Water Release techniques and had the ability to liquefy any part of his body at will, though this also made him deeply afraid of Lightning Release Ninjutsu. He joined Sasuke's Taka team in order to gather all the swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. Like his older brother Hozuki Mangetsu, he was a genius with a blade. He had white hair, purple eyes, sharp teeth, carried a great sword on his back, and wore a scroll and water flask at his waist. During Taka's cooperation with Akatsuki, he had briefly worn their uniform.
As a child, Hozuki Suigetsu was a prodigy known as the "Reincarnation of the Demon," and he was obsessively attached to the idea of "severing" things—even wanting to sever Sasuke and Karin's relationship. His fighting methods were cruel. According to Kisame, whenever he fought, he would first cut off his opponent's limbs before beheading them. After following Sasuke, he restrained himself somewhat due to Sasuke's warning against killing, but if provoked by an opponent, he would still kill. He was fairly simple-minded, sharp-tongued, impulsive, somewhat timid, and afraid of trouble. Within Taka, he was actually one of the more sensible members, which made him comparatively easy to get along with. By the time of Boruto, he had become much more composed. At the same time, he could be attentive and calm, and at critical moments, he would fight for his companions. He wanted to restore the name of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, and he was often beaten up by Karin because their personalities clashed.
