On an open stretch of ground between the east of Night-Kirin City and the Industrial New District, the Auxiliary Army's five vehicle crews were familiarizing themselves with their future means of transportation.
Gafur was one of the captains Jim had selected for the auxiliary vehicle crews. The Rune Master Selek had just introduced to them the structure, Magic Patterns, disassembly method, and usage of the transport carriage and crossbow cart.
Gafur and the fellow captains beside him, Sheffield and Newcalt—not to mention Jim and Jarg—had never imagined that the hulking thing before them, over four meters long and three meters tall, could actually be disassembled into several large components in just over ten minutes.
Although the carriage frame was cast from black iron, the many Magic Patterns on it could take care of nearly two tons of load while still keeping the ride light. Even when fully loaded, only two nags were needed to pull the carriage easily for fifty kilometers, and if the horses could be changed at regular intervals, the cargo could be hauled from Night-Kirin City to the Western Region front line in a single day.
The auxiliary crew's crossbow cart was even more complicated. Each vehicle could switch into defensive mode within a few minutes: several great shields would be erected behind the vehicle, numerous long spears laid out in front of the shields, and on the carriage frame with its awning opened, a three-meter-long Giant Crossbow was mounted.
"My Majesty, a crossbow this big could probably shoot a Magic Beast dead!" That was the first thing Gafur said when he saw the Giant Crossbow. Knight or not, anyone who saw such a massive machine would find their heart surging like a tide.
The Rune Master fired a crossbow bolt in front of everyone. The
