Faced with hundreds of Red Ants, Rowan instantly took out the first few that charged at him. But the Red Ants showed no fear and weren't intimidated by their companions' deaths. Instead, they used the opening created by his attack to close in on him.
His eight Walking Legs rose and stabbed down in quick succession, piercing one Red Ant after another before flinging their bodies away, then stabbing down again...
But far too many Red Ants were swarming him. Rowan had killed only a small portion of them, and the rest were already scurrying up his Walking Legs toward his body.
Given their size and weapons, the Red Ants could barely pierce Rowan's armor. Unfortunately, he had two huge weak spots perched on his head. He couldn't let them run wild on his back.
Just as he was about to act, pain suddenly shot through the joint of one of his Walking Legs. Rowan was startled.
It was the first time he had felt pain since becoming an insect. Even when his insides had been ripped open in the past, he hadn't felt the slightest pain.
But now, he could feel it—and the pain was growing worse, as if his muscles were melting. He couldn't help letting out a shrill cry.
When the hell had he grown pain receptors? The excruciating pain was seriously affecting his fighting ability. Was this a regression or an evolution? If it was evolution, he'd rather not have it.
Unfortunately, he had no time to complain. He raised the leg and saw a Red Ant clinging to the painful spot. It had sunk its stinger into a weak point in the armor at the joint. That was the source of the pain.
