The manager hurriedly shook his head. "Of course not. Our apartment takes security very seriously. The rooftop door is usually locked, and residents who want to go up there have to be accompanied by us."
After thinking for a moment, he quietly shifted the blame. "Speaking of falling from a building, I remember that Mr. Yoshida rented the room at the very end of the Fifth Floor, right beside that alley—he must have fallen from his own room. Judging by the location, directly below his balcony is exactly where the body was lying crosswise earlier."
After Doctor Yoshimura fell to his death, a large crowd of passersby had gathered nearby. The apartment manager had been alerted too and jogged out to see what was happening, only to be brought over by the police to provide clues.
"I see." Inspector Megure quickly settled on the next direction of the investigation. "Then let's take a look at his room."
The group entered the elevator and pressed the button for the fifth floor.
Inside the elevator, Inspector Megure made every second count, questioning the apartment manager about the tenant.
As they talked, the elevator reached the second floor and suddenly stopped. The doors slid open.
They paused their conversation and looked outside, but the hallway beyond the elevator was empty. There was no one there.
None of the police officers thought much of it. They assumed someone waiting for the elevator had grown impatient after pressing the button and gone elsewhere.
The doors soon closed, and the elevator continued upward.
But when it reached the third floor, it stopped again. The doors slid open, and there was still no one outside.
