If he returned to Silver City now, the giants would kill him. If he hid in the royal city, the Fate Weavers would kill him. He could only head for the northern coast, board the airship he had prepared, and go to a deserted island to start over.

That island had to be remote, preferably in the bitterly cold north, somewhere nobody would ever care about.

Otherwise, when the Roosevelt Empire launched its expedition, they might pass by and wipe him out.
