Background / History
Kakashi was the son of Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang of Konoha. Chiya later tells him that Sakumo was politically persecuted and did not simply commit suicide as the official story claimed, leaving Kakashi shaken by the revelation. 94
He served alongside Obito and Rin in his youth. Years later, Kakashi regrets failing to notice Obito's suffering sooner and believes that timely intervention might have prevented his fall. 112
Before Chiya became a rogue ninja, Kakashi evaluated him during a special Chūnin Exam match, fought him to a draw through the allotted time, and later reported that Chiya was a prodigy comparable to Uchiha Itachi. 22 23 27
Appearance
Kakashi is commonly seen in Konoha jōnin attire, including a green flak jacket and a mask that conceals much of his face. 158
- Often wears a dog-themed Anbu mask while on Anbu duty. 30
- Carries a katana and uses kunai in combat. 23 411
- Possesses a Sharingan used for perception and advanced techniques. 137 266
Personality
Kakashi is cautious, analytical, and strongly protective of his comrades. He warns his students not to underestimate unknown opponents, carefully studies enemy capabilities, and will choose strategic withdrawal when an enemy cannot be defeated directly. 89 235
He is also a committed mentor. After recognizing Naruto's weak fundamentals, he arranges further instruction rather than allowing Naruto to pursue strength recklessly; he later trains Sasuke intensively after the Chūnin Exams. 144 145
Kakashi carries deep remorse over both his past failures with Obito and his inability to stop Chiya before greater tragedies unfolded. 112
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Kamui
Kakashi uses the Sharingan to perceive high-speed attacks and analyze opponents' movements. 137
- Kamui — A space-time dōjutsu that distorts and transports targets into another dimension; Kakashi used it to remove Deidara's arm and later attempted to capture Chiya. 242 266
- Chakra cost — Repeated use leaves Kakashi severely exhausted. 242
- Limitation — Chiya's Observation Haki allowed him to predict Kamui's activation by sensing chakra gathering in Kakashi's eye. 266
- Later impairment — After losing his left eye, Kakashi is unable to use Kamui during the war. 411
Chidori
Kakashi's signature Lightning Release technique condenses chakra into a piercing strike. He taught Chidori to Chiya, though he initially warned that the technique's high speed normally requires Sharingan-level perception. 26
- Defeated Zabuza with Chidori during the Land of Waves mission. 93
- Uses Chidori for ambushes and lethal close-range attacks. 137 309
- His Chidori was blocked barehanded by Chiya during their later confrontation. 137
Ninken Summoning
Kakashi can summon the Eight Ninja Hounds for tracking and battlefield support. 93 278
- Uses the hounds to pursue targets by scent. 278
- Travels with Pakkun while dividing search parties across multiple routes. 278
Tactical Command
Kakashi excels at reconnaissance, battlefield assessment, and coordinating allied shinobi. 162 308
- Directed Gekko Hayate to locate Jiraiya and Tsunade while assigning Morino Ibiki to investigate suspicious ninja within Konoha. 162
- During Pain's invasion, prioritized locating and eliminating the path capable of reviving the others. 308
- Led Team 7 and Team 8 in their attempt to locate Uchiha Itachi and draw out Sasuke. 274 278
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Katana — Used during his examination battle against Chiya. 22 23
- Kunai — Used to defend against Hidan during the Fourth Shinobi World War. 411
- Eight Ninja Hounds summoning contract — Includes Pakkun and tracking hounds. 93 278
- Icha Icha Paradise — A book he reads while off duty. 145
Relationships
- Hatake Sakumo — Father. Kakashi learns from Chiya that Sakumo was politically persecuted rather than simply dying by suicide. 94
- Fujiwara Chiya — Former Konoha associate turned rogue ninja and Akatsuki member. Kakashi tested, assessed, and taught Chiya, but later repeatedly opposed him and came to view him as an overwhelming threat. 22 26 322
- Uchiha Obito — Former teammate whose descent into darkness remains one of Kakashi's greatest regrets. 112 290
- Yuhi Kurenai — Fellow jōnin and former teacher of Chiya. The two share professional respect and discuss their students' growth. 110 112
- Might Guy — Fellow Konoha jōnin who frequently works alongside Kakashi; Guy follows Kakashi's judgment despite his suspicions of Chiya. 161 171
- Naruto Uzumaki — Student. Kakashi guides Naruto toward strengthening his fundamentals and later continues leading the new Team 7. 145 230
- Uchiha Sasuke — Student. Kakashi trains Sasuke after the Chūnin Exams and attempts to use Itachi to draw him back from his pursuit of revenge. 144 274
- Chinatsu — Tsunade's daughter and a powerful young shinobi. Kakashi is protective of her but recognizes her exceptional ability. 235 264
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chiya's Examination and Defection
Kakashi serves as Chiya's opponent in a special examination intended to judge whether Chiya merits promotion. Their duel ends without a victor when the allotted time expires, and Kakashi later trains Chiya in Earth Wall and Chidori. 22 23 26
After Chiya's apparent death and later defection, Kakashi encounters him during the Land of Waves mission. Chiya manipulates Kakashi's senses with Kyōka Suigetsu, causing him to believe he killed Haku. 93 96
Instructor of Team 7
Kakashi becomes the leader of Team 7 and credits Naruto and Sasuke with helping him survive the Land of Waves mission against Zabuza and Haku. 110
Following Chiya's attack on Konoha's jōnin, Kakashi is injured but survives. He then commits himself to training Sasuke and ensuring Naruto receives instruction suited to his needs. 141 144 145
Konoha Crush Plan
After Chiya reveals Orochimaru's plot to assassinate the Third Hokage and manipulate Sunagakure, Kakashi chooses to act to protect Konoha. He mobilizes Hayate and Ibiki, accelerates the Chūnin Exams' final round, and works to prevent a war with Sunagakure. 161 162
Akatsuki Encounters
Kakashi confronts Itachi and Kisame alongside Yamashiro Aoba and Namiashi Raidō. He identifies their connection to Chiya and learns that their immediate target is Naruto, the “Legacy of the Fourth.” 187
During the mission to rescue Gaara, Kakashi defeats Deidara using Kamui, though the strain leaves him exhausted. 242
He later defeats Kakuzu after Naruto's Rasenshuriken leaves the Akatsuki member critically wounded, but Chiya's interference prevents Kakashi's Kamui from finishing the battle as intended. 266
Pain's Invasion
Kakashi coordinates Konoha's response to Pain's attack, seeking the path with the resurrection ability rather than fighting blindly. 308
He faces the Deva, Naraka, and Asura Paths, kills the Naraka Path at the cost of his own life, and is ultimately overwhelmed. The Naraka Path is subsequently revived by Nagato, rendering Kakashi's sacrifice ineffective. 310
Fourth Shinobi World War
Kakashi participates in the Allied Shinobi Forces' operations and remains a leading voice in assessing the threat posed by Chiya and Obito. 322 343
Later, despite exhaustion and the loss of his ability to use Kamui, he joins Ino–Shika–Chō against Hidan and Kakuzu until Neji's team arrives with reinforcements. 411
