Nine-Tails aftermath

The Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato, died sealing the Nine-Tails during its attack on Konoha. The village held a mass funeral for Minato, his wife, and the fallen ninja before beginning reconstruction. 2

In the aftermath, Konoha's leadership—particularly Danzō—accused the Uchiha clan of controlling the Nine-Tails. The clan was forcibly relocated to the village outskirts and placed under increased Anbu surveillance; Hiruzen tacitly permitted these measures despite recognizing that they would deepen Uchiha resentment. 2

The Uchiha crisis

As the prospect of an Uchiha coup emerged, the Konoha F4 debated how to respond. Danzō advocated eliminating the clan without sacrificing Konoha personnel, an approach ultimately accepted by the council despite Hiruzen's initial preference for negotiation. 31 32

The resulting extermination averted the feared civil war but intensified distrust between Konoha's leadership and its clans. Hiruzen later portrayed Uchiha Itachi's actions as preserving village peace, while Itachi understood that the Hokage had tacitly approved the massacre. 47

Decline of the F4

Fujiwara Chiya repeatedly exposed alleged crimes and abuses connected to Hiruzen and Danzō, including the treatment of the White Fang, Hizashi Hyuga, the Uchiha, and the Sarutobi clan's accumulation of hidden manpower. 139

Chiya later manipulated the F4 into a public scandal at the Hokage Office. The incident exposed Danzō's Sharingan- and First Hokage Cell-grafted arm before Jiraiya and Konoha's clan heads, damaging the council's authority and contributing to Hiruzen's loss of office. 150 159

Konoha Crush Plan and succession

During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru's forces infiltrated Konoha alongside Sunagakure ninja. Kabuto's genjutsu incapacitated spectators, the Sound Four erected the Four Violet Flames Formation, and Orochimaru took Hiruzen hostage. 164

Hiruzen died during the conflict. With his reputation shattered by Chiya's revelations, civilians and ninja publicly denounced him and demanded Tsunade become Hokage. 166 168 171 Tsunade subsequently assumed leadership, while Chiya believed Konoha could recover after the removal of Hiruzen and Danzō. 183

Pain's invasion

Forewarned by intelligence derived from Jiraiya's final code and Chiya's information, Konoha evacuated civilians and younger ninja to shelters beneath Hokage Rock before Pain's attack. 304

Chiya erected an Uchiha Flame Formation around the Hokage Office, trapping Konoha's top fighters and Anbu inside. Tsunade recognized that the barrier both weakened the village's defense and protected Chiya's family from the battle. 307 308

Pain's assault caused widespread destruction and casualties despite Konoha's preparations. After Pain ceased to exist and Nagato was restored, the village began reconstruction under Tsunade. 308 322

Institutions and Defenses

• Ninja Academy — Provides a six-year curriculum combining chakra refinement, the Three Body Technique, physical training, ninja-tool use, humanities, geography, and mathematics. Exceptional students may graduate early. 4 5
• Anbu — Conducted surveillance of the relocated Uchiha district and served as one of Konoha's elite forces. 2 147

Relationships

• Uchiha clan — A foundational clan whose contribution to Konoha's creation is omitted from the village's academy history text. After the Nine-Tails attack, Konoha's leadership isolated and surveilled the clan, culminating in its extermination. 2 4 32
• Sunagakure — Allied with Konoha, though the alliance diverted Land of Wind missions toward Konoha and contributed to Sunagakure's economic and military decline. Orochimaru exploited this tension for the Konoha Crush Plan. 161 164
