Chen Ge clenched his teeth, doing his best not to make a sound. The instant he saw the corpse, he sent He Shan a message: "Call the police! Now!"
The light was too dim, and there was a door between them. The viewers in the livestream had no idea what was happening. Chen Ge had no time to think about them; he pressed close to the crack in the door, not daring to blink.
"So they were digging up the body hidden in the building." Chen Ge huddled behind the wall, not daring to make a single move. This was the most dangerous, tense moment. The tenants were only a few steps away. If they turned and came into this room, they would find him.
"Quit dragging your feet and dig!" the Landlord muttered, walking over with his tools. He spread a sack on the ground and started chipping away at the cement around the Female Corpse.
Perhaps they were afraid of waking the residents downstairs. They moved very quietly, making little noise.
They broke through the wall, and chunks of cement kept falling. Whether from the heat or fear, sweat beaded on everyone's foreheads.
They divided up the work, but this was the first time they had done anything like this. They were terrified and flustered, so progress was slow.
More than ten minutes later, they finally freed the Female Corpse from the wall and put her in the sack.
"Fatso, stay behind and clean up the wall. The rest of you, come with me to the Back Mountain. We'll find somewhere to bury her." The Landlord held an iron crowbar as he directed them.
"I'm coming with you!" the Short Fat Man blurted out without hesitation. After digging up the Female Corpse, he was nearly spent. There was no way he dared to stay here alone.
"Look at you, scared out of your wits! Juan, stay here and clean up with him. We'll meet at the usual spot in the Back Mountain." The Landlord gave the only woman a few instructions, then he and the Tattooed Man carried the sack downstairs.
He walked with a limp, his footsteps alternately light and heavy. As he passed the room where Chen Ge was hiding, he suddenly stopped.
"Why's there so much stuffing on the floor?"
At the Landlord's voice, Chen Ge's heart leapt into his throat. The Ragdoll had been ripped open, and some stuffing and scraps of paper had fallen to the floor. The voice-activated light had come on, and when Chen Ge realized someone was coming, he hadn't had time to pick them up.
"Forget about that for now. This thing weighs a ton. Let's bury it first." The Tattooed Man urged him from behind. The Landlord didn't press the matter, and the two passed the door Chen Ge was hiding behind. It seemed they had gone.
"Fatso, quit standing around. Get to work." The woman and the Short Fat Man began clearing away the trash and wiping the blood off the tools. A few minutes later, the two of them carried a large sack downstairs.
The footsteps gradually faded away. Only after the third floor had fallen quiet again did Chen Ge dare to take a deep breath. Still wary, he peered through the crack in the door.
The corridor was pitch-black. The tenants had all left.
"Damn! That scared me to death."
He waited another three minutes. When nothing happened outside, Chen Ge slowly pushed the door open and crept out.
To avoid being spotted, he didn't turn on his phone's flashlight. He kept one hand against the wall and moved forward slowly.
"From what they said, none of them are good people, but they really had nothing to do with the Female Corpse in the wall." The group had been unlucky. After taking over the old man's Apartment Building, who would have thought they'd find a corpse inside a wall on the top floor? Any normal person's first reaction would be to call the police, but these people had plenty to hide. They were afraid the police would uncover their criminal records, and they couldn't stand the thought of living in the same building as a corpse. They had no choice but to take the blame for the real Killer and dig up the body to bury it themselves.
"No wonder the Landlord kept telling me not to go out after midnight." Chen Ge's eyes had adjusted to the darkness. He quickened his pace, eager to leave the Apartment Building.
Moving as quietly as he could, Chen Ge didn't even plan to retrieve his Backpack. He headed straight for the first floor.
"Damn it." The security gate at the entrance to the Apartment Building was locked. He was trapped inside.
"They went to bury the body and still remembered to lock the door on their way out?" Chen Ge had a bad feeling. "The windows in the first-floor corridor have Anti-theft Nets, and the second-floor windows are boarded up. The only way out of the Apartment Building is through a second-floor room window."
The atmosphere inside the building was eerie, and Chen Ge didn't want to stay. He took the Tool Hammer and went back to the second floor.
The dark corridor stretched into the distance like the open mouth of a ferocious beast. Once you stepped inside, it would chew you to pieces.
"Too quiet." Chen Ge's room was at the far left end of the corridor, right next to the Landlord's. On high alert, he was terrified that one of the doors might suddenly open.
He slowed his steps and kept his breathing steady. It took him more than a minute to reach his room.
"Good thing nothing happened. I'll tie the bedsheet to the window frame and climb down from the second floor. It should be fine." Chen Ge took out his key and used the faint glow of his phone screen to find the keyhole. Just as he was about to insert the key, his arm froze in midair.
"What happened to the half-strand of hair I left in the keyhole?"
His hair stood on end. Fear surged in from all sides, and Chen Ge's hands and feet went cold.
"Someone's been in my room! They know I'm not inside!"
His breathing quickened, and it felt as if his lungs had been stuffed with ice.
"When did they go in? After digging up the body? Or when they spotted the stuffing on the floor?" There wasn't much point in thinking about it now. Chen Ge stepped back and stared at the room he had lived in. He quickly calmed down. "I can't go back in. Those people could be inside right now! Maybe they're hiding behind the door with a steel crowbar!"
Chen Ge's strong nerves helped him regain his composure quickly. He had to escape as fast as possible. The longer he waited, the more dangerous it would get.
Step by step, Chen Ge backed away without making a sound. He knew full well that the only way out of the Apartment Building was through a second-floor window. Every other exit was blocked.
In the pitch-black, silent corridor, Chen Ge quietly retreated to the far right end without making a sound. This was the point on the second floor farthest from his room.
"The tenants are even more dangerous than I thought. Whether I make it through tonight depends on this one gamble!" Chen Ge gritted his teeth, raised the Tool Hammer, and slammed it into the lock on the rightmost door.
"Bang!"
The deathly silence that had engulfed Ping An Apartment shattered. Chen Ge hammered at the lock like a madman, and with each deafening blow, the thing he least wanted to happen came to pass.
At the far left end of the corridor, the door to Room 208, where Chen Ge had been staying, swung open! Hearing the noise, the Tattooed Man and the Landlord charged out, brandishing a steel crowbar and a Kitchen Knife, their faces twisted with rage!
"Open already!"
"Clang!"
After several more blows, the lock finally fell off. Without hesitation, Chen Ge kicked the door open!
