Ch. 61Captured
Chapter Summary: “Captured”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Deidara and Konan confront Genkyo members Uchiha Gen, Bone Lord, Hyuga Mokujin, and Kagami. Despite being outnumbered, Genkyo shows little concern and refuses to reveal the Jinchūriki’s location.
- Konan realizes that the Jinchūriki is not present and decides to retreat rather than risk a battle against an unfamiliar organization whose members may be extremely powerful.
- Kagami blocks their escape with an Ice Mirror, but Bone Lord clarifies that Genkyo does not intend to fight. Instead, he demands that Konan and Deidara sign their names, following Genkyo’s rule that strong opponents must leave a signature after retreating or being defeated.
- Deidara secretly embeds Explosive Clay in the signature paper and attempts to detonate it after signing. The trap fails, apparently because Genkyo’s system neutralizes or handles it. Mokujin had noticed the scheme with his Byakugan but ignored it.
- Bone Lord completes the mission but later discovers that his bone techniques damaged his clothing, leaving him humorously puzzled.
- Elsewhere, Sasori is overwhelmed after Chiyo joins Shibi Aburame and Uzumaki Reikawa. Shibi’s Kikaichū prevent Sasori from staying in one place, damage his chakra threads, and interfere with his poison and puppetry.
- Sasori loses control of the Third Kazekage puppet and is eventually bound by Reikawa’s Adamantine Sealing Chains. With his chakra immobilized, Sasori cannot fight effectively.
- Reikawa points out that Sasori foolishly placed his Core in an obvious vital location and even labeled it as his true body. Sasori attempts a final attack with a hidden needle, but it is easily blocked.
- Chiyo silently gives up, while Sasori becomes increasingly irritated by Reikawa’s unsolicited advice about improving his immortality techniques. The encounter ends with Sasori angrily calling Reikawa insane.
Character Developments
- Konan demonstrates caution and strategic judgment by retreating when she recognizes that the Jinchūriki is absent and Genkyo may be stronger than expected.
- Deidara remains impulsive and prideful, trying to sabotage Genkyo even while retreating. His failed explosive trick adds to his frustration and embarrassment.
- Bone Lord is shown to be literal, detached, and committed to Genkyo’s unusual rules. His concern over his damaged clothes provides comic relief.
- Hyuga Mokujin displays sharp observation through his Byakugan but remains indifferent to Deidara’s attack because Genkyo’s system can deal with it.
- Sasori suffers a decisive defeat due to the limitations of his puppet body and the coordinated tactics of his opponents.
- Uzumaki Reikawa is both effective and irreverently casual, treating Sasori’s capture as an opportunity to criticize his body design rather than merely interrogate or defeat him.
- Chiyo appears emotionally affected by confronting Sasori but ultimately has no words left for him, emphasizing the distance between them.
Significant Themes
- Strategic retreat versus pride: Konan prioritizes the mission, while Deidara’s pride drives him to make a pointless final attack.
- Unpredictable new powers: Genkyo’s strength, membership, and strange rules create uncertainty for established organizations like Akatsuki.
- The weaknesses of immortality: Sasori’s attempt to preserve himself through puppetry still leaves him vulnerable because his Core is poorly concealed and his body has mechanical limitations.
- Humor amid conflict: Genkyo’s signature rule, Deidara’s failed explosion, Bone Lord’s ruined clothes, and Reikawa’s mocking advice undercut the seriousness of the battles.
- Teamwork and counters: Sasori’s defeat results from the complementary abilities of Chiyo, Shibi, and Reikawa, whose techniques exploit the weaknesses of puppetry.
Character Interactions
- Konan restrains Deidara and orders the retreat, establishing her authority and practical leadership.
- Bone Lord formally demands signatures from Konan and Deidara, while Deidara attempts to provoke him with explosive threats. Bone Lord’s complete lack of reaction frustrates Deidara.
- Mokujin silently observes Deidara’s failed scheme, reinforcing Genkyo’s calm and confident attitude.
- Reikawa repeatedly turns Sasori’s head back toward him after Sasori tries to ignore his criticism, creating a comic exchange between captor and captive.
- Reikawa treats Sasori less like a dangerous enemy and more like someone offering flawed technical advice, while Sasori reacts with mounting disbelief and anger.
