Background / History

Origin and nature

According to the account revealed in the Origin Tome, an entity called Mother created Azerena from intact Divinity and created the world of Azeroth to nurture her while she remained an infant World Soul. Mother also created An'she from her left eye and Elune from her right eye to protect and watch over Azeroth. 340

Azeroth is described as a small but exceptionally high-order world capable of naturally generating all six primal forces: Life, Order, Holy Light, Fel, Void, and Death. Unlike Draenor, Azeroth can host true gods. 20

Corruption and external control

Before Azeroth awakened, the Old Gods drove their roots into the planet and stole power from its World Soul. Their influence turned elementals into servants and allowed the Old Gods to establish competing Black Empires across the world. 246

The Titans of the Pantheon also sought to shape Azeroth through the Forge of Origination and the Forge of Wills. Their observer, Algalon, was intended to assess the world and trigger planetary reorigination should Azeroth deviate from the Titans' intended path. 153 261

Contact with Taelan Fordring

After Taelan was defeated by Kathra'natir and targeted by N'Zoth, Azerena appeared within his consciousness and called him her knight. Though badly weakened, she gave him half of a golden gem, revitalized his Dragon Codex, and bestowed the Azerena's Shield Codex. 120

Azerena later awakened fully and selected Taelan as her guardian because the Bronze Dragonflight had ignored the will and suffering of Azeroth in pursuit of its preferred timeline. She cultivated him into a guardian able to grow without limit and command every primal force. 153

Recovery after the Old God wars

Azerite appeared in the Temple of Azerena after the death of C'Thun. It was identified as an energy crystal unique to Azeroth, capable of nourishing land and sharing an origin with Taelan's power. 214

Following N'Zoth's defeat, Azerena absorbed the souls of Ny'alotha's fallen creatures. These souls became nourishment for the Emerald Dream or wisps awaiting reincarnation, marking the beginning of Azeroth's own river of souls. 246

After the final Old Gods were destroyed, Azeroth was considered free of their direct rule. Her liberation became the foundation for a period of recovery before the conflict with Sargeras. 281 328
