Nature
- The Holy Light is treated as both a power source and a primal force rather than an inherently moral force. It can be used for protection or violence depending on its wielder's intent. 29 282
- Conventional Paladins gain recognition from the Holy Light through faith, training, and repeated invocation. Naturally awakened users are exceptionally rare. 4 25
- The Holy Light associated with Taelan Fordring differs from ordinary faith-based use: his body absorbs ambient energy and continuously converts it into Light that belongs entirely to him. 14 20 21
- Naaru are regarded as representatives of the Holy Light, but their depleted Holy power can turn them into Void entities. Taelan's self-generated Light is explicitly distinguished from theirs. 151
- Mastery carries a severe danger: a user who grows too close to a Force can be assimilated by it and lose their independent self. The Holy Light's particular nature is Assimilation. 177 334
Properties
Healing and Purification
The Holy Light can restore injuries, remove harmful effects, and reinforce allies, though Paladin healing may also cause pain. 7 54
- Holy Bolt can damage hostile targets while healing allies. 14
- Cleansing Aura restores health and reduces curses, toxins, and persistent negative effects. 54
- At Highlord-level strength, Cleansing Aura can end persistent negative effects across an area of up to two kilometers. 118
- The Light can fail to respond when a wielder's faith collapses or wavers, as seen with Liadren and later Demethia. 126 185
Protection and Barriers
The Holy Light can be projected into personal and large-scale protective barriers.
- Power Word: Shield absorbs heavy damage, but cannot be applied to the same target again for one minute. 35
- Divine Shield creates a translucent barrier capable of blocking powerful attacks. 31
- By resonating his Light with Light's Hope Chapel, Taelan develops Holy Shield, a barrier whose size can be altered while he continues channeling power. 46
- Holy Light barriers can provide warmth and protection from environmental cold in addition to physical defense. 46 50
Combat Applications
Holy Light can be shaped into direct magical attacks, weapon enchantments, and battlefield-wide assaults.
- Holy Bolt is an instantaneous, material-free projectile with high flight speed; it deals magical damage and can also heal. It cannot lock onto targets. 14
- Holy Mastery, granted through Sun God Anser's favor, imbues Holy Spells with An'she's Fire and increases their effectiveness against undead, demons, and Void creatures. 49
- Fist of the Heavens combines Holy Bolt damage, lightning, and meteors summoned through An'she's blessing. 68
- Holy Light can be condensed onto weapons, turning blades into powerful holy armaments. 184 229
- Advanced control permits silent casting, making Holy Light spells difficult to anticipate or interrupt. 269 274
Assimilation and Spatial Movement
At demigod level, the Holy Light's assimilative nature extends to space itself.
- A user can assimilate space within their domain and transform into Holy Light to move freely through it. 153 177
- Taelan can repeatedly Blink within his own domain; intelligence reports describe up to four consecutive movements. 229
- His Sanctuary can assimilate surrounding space and manifest Holy Light directly upon hostile undead. 240
- Excessive mastery risks permanently transforming the user into the Holy Light itself. 177
Anser-Linked Manifestations
Taelan's baptism at Light's Hope Chapel connects his Holy Light to Sun God Anser and the Crystal Dome. 48 49
- The Eight Mirrors of Holy Light represent Justice, Humility, Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Sacrifice, Honor, and Soul. 49
- Eight Virtues seals the target and surrounding area into a fair duel; outside interference results in punishment and banishment. 49
- Creatures killed within the Eight Virtues' sealed space lose their souls permanently. 49
- The ability has a twelve-month cooldown. 49
- Anser's favor grants Holy Armor, increasing physical durability and resistance to Chaos, Death, and Void forces. 49
History
Taelan Fordring seeks to awaken the Holy Light independently so that he can become an Initiate Paladin before the usual path of Baptism and training. Tirion explains that such naturally awakened users are known as the Awakened and are extremely rare. 4
Archmage Antonidas later identifies Taelan as a “Child of Light.” Unlike ordinary Paladins, Taelan continuously creates Holy Light by absorbing ambient energy; Antonidas concludes that this unique constitution permits instantaneous spellcasting and may eventually let him manipulate the Light as freely as a mage handles Arcane energy. 14
During Taelan's baptism at Light's Hope Chapel, the conventional Holy Light initially fails to answer him despite his existing mastery. When he channels his own Light into the Holy Emblem, the Eight Mirrors of Holy Light activate and synchronize the Crystal Dome within his spirit with Anser's power. This event grants him Holy Mastery, Holy Armor, World Power, and the Eight Virtues. 48 49
As Taelan's mastery grows, the Holy Light increasingly manifests as a domain capable of cleansing battlefields, weakening demons and undead, creating holy stairways and angelic constructs, and assimilating space for movement. 145 153 185 288
