Shrek accepts students through standard recruitment, but it also uses special admissions and discretionary placements. Huo Yuhao receives a special admission quota because Body Martial Souls generally possess lower innate soul power, while Lin Yun is admitted to the Outer Court after Mu En rules that his Skeletal Bone Dragon Martial Soul alone is not sufficient grounds for execution 1 2.

The student population is described as having three broad groups:

• Commoners such as Lin Yun and Huo Yuhao, comprising roughly one-third of students.
• Children of high-ranking nobles whose families can disregard the royal family’s stance toward Shrek.

External influence is generally restrained within the academy. Students of influential backgrounds are expected to settle personal conflicts themselves, while personal strength and money are treated as the principal forms of currency 8.

Policies and Training

Treatment of Dark and Evil Martial Souls

Shrek is regarded as the foremost authority on suppressing dark- and evil-aligned Martial Souls. Lin Yun is brought to the academy after his village is attacked by Evil Soul Masters and is placed under observation because his Skeletal Bone Dragon Martial Soul is classified as an Evil Martial Soul 1 13.

Mu En argues that Lin Yun should not be condemned for a Martial Soul’s aura before committing wrongdoing, instead treating him as an opportunity to examine whether Martial Souls truly determine a person’s character 1. This position is not universally shared: Zhou Yi cites prior Bone Dragon Soul Masters who became Evil Soul Masters and advocates vigilance based on precedent 9.

The academy later reduces the rewards for Lin Yun’s Freshman Assessment victory because suspicion surrounding his Martial Soul remains unresolved and the administration wishes to preserve its reputation 27.

Outer Court Discipline

Outer Court training is notably severe. Zhou Yi orders Freshman Class One to run one hundred laps within an hour, expelling students who fail; she later expels more than ten students from the class 9 17.

The academy also permits exceptional arrangements for valuable students:

• Lin Yun is exempted from Zhou Yi’s physical training in exchange for taking on other tasks and accepting challenges from fellow students 9 10.
• Yan Shaozhe confirms that Lin Yun must formally participate in the Freshman Assessment, but guarantees his student status regardless of the result 22.

Soul Hunting and Field Operations

Senior academy figures supervise or arrange soul hunts for promising students. Yan Shaozhe personally escorts Lin Yun to the Star Dou Forest for his first and second soul rings 1 3. Mu En later pairs Lin Yun with Zhang Lexuan for another soul hunt and authorizes them to act against those responsible for persecuting a student’s family 17.

The academy’s Inspection Team also deploys Inner Court students against Evil Soul Masters. Its personnel are active in Flying Star City, the Valley of Fear, and the Extreme North 14 18 33.

History

After Evil Soul Masters massacre Lin Yun’s village, Shrek’s Inspectorate arrives to purge them and brings the surviving Lin Yun to the Sea God Pavilion. Though his newly awakened Skeletal Bone Dragon Martial Soul is regarded as evil, Mu En orders that he be admitted to the Outer Court rather than executed, with Yan Shaozhe assigned to supervise his soul-ring acquisition 1.

The academy also extends special admission to Huo Yuhao after Yan Shaozhe encounters him in the Star Dou Forest. Lin Yun and Huo Yuhao subsequently register together and begin Outer Court life 2 4.

During the Flying Star City incident, Mu En sends Lin Yun to investigate missing students despite the danger. The mission reveals a city saturated with death energy and leads to the death of an Inner Court inspector; Zhang Lexuan later escorts Lin Yun back to Shrek and records his report 11 12 16.

Mu En later authorizes Lin Yun and Zhang Lexuan to investigate corruption linked to a noble family in the Heaven Spirit Empire. The assignment combines a soul hunt with Inspection Team authority to arrest or kill the implicated parties as warranted 17 24.

Shrek’s Inner Court students are attacked in the Extreme North by an Evil Soul Master. Ma Xiaotao sacrifices herself to help Dai Yueheng escape, while later accounts state that Shrek’s planned tournament lineup loses several members before the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament 33 35 42.
