Gray, troubled by El-Melloi II's apology, suddenly heard familiar footsteps and instinctively looked in that direction.
Sure enough, Michael came walking over from the other end of the corridor with a smile.
"Good day, Lord Animusphere."
El-Melloi II sighed deeply inwardly, gave a slight bow, and spoke with utmost respect.
Though they were both Lords, he was probably the least imposing Lord at the Clock Tower. He even served as a regular lecturer in a classroom; none of the other Lords would ever do such a thing.
Of course, he did so partly because of his easygoing nature and because he did not mistake hollow glory for something real. On the other hand, El-Melloi currently truly could not uphold the dignity of a Lord.
The last reason was personal. Perhaps because of that Holy Grail War ten years ago, Michael had left a shadow in his heart.
"Good day, Lord Waver."
Michael nodded politely, then looked at Sefen beside El-Melloi II. His eyes narrowed slightly, as though he had seen through the boy's true nature.
"Lord Michael Animusphere is absolutely right."
"What a pity."
"Of course. After all, you're my master."
"Then that is quite an honor for you."
A bitter smile appeared beneath El-Melloi VII's face. Though he knew how Lord Waver had done it, that alone placed him far beyond his reach.
"Then I shall take my leave."
He remained as respectful as ever, while his mind raced as he considered the meaning behind Michael Animusphere's words.
But after a long silence, he finally shook his head slowly, as heavily as though his entire body had been filled with molten lead.
"I'm sorry, Lord Michael Animusphere..."

Lord Waver seemed to think of something. Smiling, he raised a hand and snapped his fingers crisply.
