Background / History

Lin Fan, a veteran Dragon Ball fan, transmigrated into the body of the eleven-year-old Sun Wukong one year before the story begins. Retaining knowledge of the world’s dangers, he left Mount Paozu and trained under Master Roshi, whose connection to Grandpa Gohan allowed Wukong to become his disciple. Within a year, he had nearly reached Roshi’s level. 1

After obtaining the Dragon Ball System, Wukong traveled to the Lookout to activate its seven stone Dragon Balls. The system granted wishes and grew stronger alongside him, establishing Wukong’s long-term pursuit of strength, techniques, and training resources. 1 2

He later joined Bulma’s Dragon Ball search in exchange for a Gravity Chamber. Their journey brought him into contact with Yamcha, Chi-Chi, the Ox-King, Pilaf, and Shenron, while his training rapidly outpaced the martial artists of Earth. 3 5 6 8

Appearance

Wukong is first depicted as a young martial artist in an orange Turtle School uniform. Although his strength grows dramatically, Bulma notes that his appearance changes little during his two-year absence from Earth; he can also use transformation magic to assume an older, taller version of himself. 1 14 15

  • Wears an orange martial arts uniform bearing the “Turtle” insignia early in the story. 1 5
  • Later creates a similar uniform marked with the “Wu” character. 20 21
  • His Super Saiyan form gives him golden, raised hair and light-green pupils. 13
  • Super Saiyan 2 further sharpens his aura and hair while surrounding him with crackling lightning. 44

Personality

Wukong is intensely focused on strength, often prioritizing training, advanced techniques, and practical combat experience over ordinary concerns. He actively seeks gravity-based training, travels to North King Kai for instruction, and deliberately fights Frost at length to gain real battle experience. 3 11 12 30

Despite his pragmatism and confidence, he is protective and considerate toward those close to him. He defeats threats overwhelming his allies, helps Android 8 gain freedom, holds back against Krillin to preserve his confidence, and spares Piccolo after defeating him. 5 19 24 43

He also has a playful, teasing side. Wukong jokes with Bulma, pranks North King Kai, disguises himself during his travels, and uses Chiaotzu’s weakness in arithmetic to help Krillin win a tournament match. 2 23 27 35
